At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 13th July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a good show of 405 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.
PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 121 prime bulls forward with all dairy bred cattle dearer and good continentals remaining the same good trade as previous weeks. Top overall was a quality British Blue cross from Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle achieving £1755.60 and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin; Messrs Hall also sold top price Limousin cross to £1724.09 and this was purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Simmentals sold to £1406.48 from Gerrard House, Wigton and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 214.5p was attained by Messrs Telfer, Newton High House, Hexham for their Limousin, this was purchased by Robert Medcalf, Brockwood Abattoir, Halifax.
Black and whites were very good to sell and achieved a days top of £1238.79 from Messrs Workman, The Beeches, Carlisle purchased by Capper Farming, Glasgow. Holsteins sold to £1159.57 from Messrs Johnston, Cote House, Carlisle and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Top pence per kilo of 180.5p was received by Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham for a Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: A small entry of only 35 prime steers and heifers forward whereby a lot more could have been sold to vendors advantage. Top overall of £1666.01 being achieved by Geoff Story, Newbigging, Carlisle with a Limousin cross steer and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close, Maryport sold top pence per kilo steer of 221.5p.
Heifers were also very good to sell and peaked at £1558 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle; Messrs Story, Newbigging sold another to £1512.41. Top overall pence per kilo of 229.5p was attained twice and on both occasions by Newbigging Farm. Please advise entries for next weeks sale.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A good show of 261 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with a large ringside of buyers ensuring a flying trade again at Carlisle.
Messrs Oxley & Co, Barholm Mains sold a British Blue cow for 810kg, 197.5p, £1599 to David Holmes. Messrs Graham, Cumdivock Farm sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 892kg, 170.5p, £1520 to Owain Llyr. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall sold a Limousin cow for 762kg, 192.5p, £1466 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Irving, Greenwrae Croft sold the top priced South Down cow for 966kg, 144.5p, £1395 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mair, Meikleholm sold a Limousin cow for 849kg, 163.5p, £1388 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Ridley, Woodhall run of cows topped at 709kg, 186.5p, £1322 to Owain Llyr. All classes of black and white cows were in great demand, Mr Harry Hunter, Cape Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 887kg, 141.5p, £1255 & 802kg, 147.5p, £1182 purchased by Les Fell and Dovecote Park. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Holstein cross cows topped at 843kg, 145.5p, £1226 and 818kg, 143.5p, £1173 both bought by Dovecote Park. Messrs Beaty, Langhorn sold the top priced Friesian 801kg, 145.5p, £1165 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Mallinson, Hallfield sold a Holstein cross cow for 800kg, 145.5p, £1164 also to Dovecote Park. PRIME SHEEP: A great entry of 2720 head, the 13th is unlucky for some but not those who consigned sheep at Borderway this week with 2300 lambs sold to average 230ppk, this being well beyond competitors returns.
Another mind blowing 169 runs of sheep sold beyond £100 a head, however all weights and grades were well catered for with weights from 25kg to 58.5kg forward representing 15 different breeds
Two vendors showed the top price accolade this week both with simply sublime single lambs selling at £129 a head. First to reach this figure was a 52kg Texel x lamb from M/s SD Allen, Ellerslea, Dalston which sold to M/s Morgan Helliwell. Not long after a 57kg Suffolk from M/s Pearson, Wavercroft, Wigton also made this figure selling to Mr Robert Skelton.
M/s Allen also topped per kilo with a beautiful Beltex lamb which weighed 40kg and sold at £127 (317.5ppk) to Mr Andrew Dawson.
Mule lambs were found in greater numbers to average £89.88 a head to a top of £108 for a pen of 5 from M/s Foster, Coombe Crag, Brampton and to 222.2p for a pen of 10 for M/s Carruthers, Peela Hill, Bewcastle (45kg £100).
M/s Browell, Quarry House, Hexham sold an outstanding run of 50 Beltex x Texel x lambs to average £113.82 a head to top at £123.50, M/s Scott, Thirlwall Castle hot on their heels with a similar consignment averaging £113.40 a head to a top of £122.
M/s Crozier, Faugh Beeches sold a run of Suffolk x Mule lambs to average £111.41 a head to a top of £116.
