PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep drew another good entry of over 3000 head. Numbers were slightly dampened with a beautiful day forecast in a very catchy time weather-wise. Trade for all classes remained extremely strong posting an overall average of 221.5ppk or £93.57 per head.
Two vendors hit the top price of £128 firstly for a cracking single Texel from Messrs R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle and again for a pen of 5 Texels from Messrs LW & CM Todd & Son, Longhurst who had another pen at £126. Top per kilo were an outstanding pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs Murray, The Throp which sold for 305.3 per kilo (38kg, £116). These were closely followed at 300p by Adam & Amy Bell, Thethwaite (39kg, £117). Adam and Amy sold 27 export types at an average weight of 38.3kg to average 288.46p (£110.63 a head) To emphasise the level of trade for all types Messrs Walton, Farnbury sold a pen of 49kg Texel x Mule lambs at £112

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 3rd August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where a great show of 365 Cast Cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were forward.
PRIME BULLS: A similar entry of 84 prime bulls forward with all classes less money on the week especially plainer types which attained more last week due to the festival. Top overall was paid to Messrs Boocock, St Lois Farm, York for their British Blue which accumulated to £1707.05 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston, Limousins sold to £1559.58 from Messrs Hird, West End, Cockermouth and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor with Blonde crosses to £1415.14 from Messrs Hall, Knockneen, Stranraer and again purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top overall pence per kilo was a British Blue cross from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton who achieved 218.5ppk and was purchased by Frasers Butchers, Stranraer.
Dairy bred bulls as previously said were harder to cash on the plainest types although well fleshed ones were not as far back on the week. Top overall was £1122.71 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Pickering, Peel Flatt, Hexham purchased by Jewitt Meats. And £1110.42 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Robinson, Burtholme, Brampton purchased by Messrs Capper, Glasgow. Top pence per kilo of 177.5p was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Mitchinson, Beckstones, Penrith with a Fleckvieh purchased by Messrs Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax and secondly by Messrs Jackson, Skelton Woodend, Penrith for a Friesian purchased by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 47 prime steers and heifers were forward, achieving a good trade throughout. The sale topped at £1688.12 for a superb Limousin cross steer consigned by Messrs JJ & E Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton. The same vendor also sold the second top to £1668.20, both were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo came from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle achieving 228.5ppk for another Limousin cross.
A large entry of heifers proved very easily sold and saw a top of £1585.85 and £1583.55 for two outstanding Limousin crosses from regular consignors Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, both of which were purchased by Frasers Butchers, Stranraer. Charolais crosses sold to £1331.82 from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton, purchased by King Street Butchers.
Top overall pence per kilo of 233.5ppk was attained three times all for Limousin cross heifers. Firstly, by Messrs Jarman, Brow Top, Workington then Messrs Vevers, High Stenries, Lockerbie, and finally by Messrs Miller, High Aketon, all of the above were purchased by M Wharton, Blackbrow Abattoir, Wigton.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: One of the best shows of 250 cast cows seen at Borderway for some time with over 20 buyers ensuring the dearest trade to date with 3 cows selling for £2000 plus and 8 cows selling for 200ppk or more.
Messrs Wainwright, Todd Hall run of 8 outstanding British Blue cows sold to average £1882.96 and 223.35ppk and topped at 892kg, 242.5p, £2163 and 954kg, 223.5p, £2132 both to Charles Kirkpatrick, 863kg, 238.5p, £2058 to David Holmes and 834kg, 226.5p, £1889, 794kg, 224.5p, £1782, 775kg, 229.5p, £1778 and 787kg, 206.5p, £1625 all to Owain Llyr. Seymour Farms sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 729kg, 223.5p, £1629 to David Holmes.
Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold the top priced Limousin cow for 865kg, 164.5p, £1422 to Messrs Roberts, Wales. Messrs Powley, Low Northsceugh run of cows topped at 716kg, 193.5p, £1385 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House sold the top priced Beef Shorthorn cow for 986kg, 139.5p, 139.5p, £1375 to Charles Kirkpatrick.
Once again all black and white cows were in great demand and selling well above vendors expectations. How End Farms sold an over 30 month Brown Swiss bullock for 772kg, 176.5p, £1362 to James Gracey. Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield runs of cows topped at 891kg, 1479.5p, £1332 for a Holstein cross to Charles Kirkpatrick.
