On Monday 17th August, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock, whereby a large show of 465 cast cows, bull and prime cattle were on offer, along with 2958 prime and cast sheep.
PRIME SHEEP: Prime and cast sheep drew another great entry of 2958 head comprising 2627 lambs and 331 ewes and rams. On what is traditionally the Anniversary Sale week, Borderway was once again full of sheep with quality and variety in abundance allowing all orders to be fulfilled. Vendors couldn’t be anything but elated with returns posting an SQQ average of 215.81p all in 214.2p again eclipsing other outlets. This equates to £192.64 which is £13.44 ahead of this day last year; 27 lots sold for 270-317.8ppk and 132 lots over £100.
Topping the sale at a lofty £141 was a fabulous Dutch Texel lamb from M/s TP Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle which sold to Mr R Skelton. M/s Wigham sold 48 lambs to average £111.46 (257.77p). Making a return to Borderway was M/s TR & EA Milburn, Wall End, Greenhead who sold a simply sensational pen of 5 Beltex lambs to top per kilo of 317.8p (36.5kg £116) to Mr A Dawson the run of 33 lambs from M/s Milburn averaged an eye watering 281.41ppk £111.03 weighing in at 39.45p. Suffolks sold to £106 for a pen of 16 from J&D Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham and 215.4 from M/s Graham, Miller Hill, Gilsland. Mules to £110 for heavies from M/s Carruthers, Peelahill and to 205.6p for a pen of 30 from J Browell & Sons, Quarry House, Hexham. 222 Mule wethers averaged £87.32 a head
A larger show of cast ewes were firmer on the week to £120 for a pen of Texels from M/s Musgrave, Cardew Hall

Top overall was a very good Limousin from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith achieving £1698.14 and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton to £1624.74 purchased by Messrs Helliwell, Rochdale. Charolais to £1552.40 from Messrs McClanachan, Millhill Farm, Lockerbie and British Blues to £1550.30 from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith. Top overall pence per kilo of 231.5p went to Messrs Moffat, Stone House, Gretna and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. British Blue crosses to 217.5 from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle, purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Dairy bred bulls very easily sold also to a top of £1161.88 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick and £1125.5 for another from Messrs Gott, Prospect House, Cockermouth. Top price per kilo of 193.50p was attained by Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Alby Field, Carlisle with their Fleckvieh purchased by Wrights of Boston. Messrs Mattocks, Aulby sold their Friesian to 182.5p and was purchased by Bowland Foods. Similar numbers required on a weekly basis.

PRIME CATTLE: A very small entry of 39 prime steers and heifers were forward, with a national shortage evident. Trade was fantastic throughout and seen prime steers from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle receiving £1694.18, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith sold another to £1647.81 and £1644.28. Top overall pence per kilo of 243.5ppk was paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan with their exceptional Limousin cross steer purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.
Heifers were seen to top at £1679.13 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Story, Newbiggin to £1592.68 and Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle to £1578.96. Top pence per kilo came from a run of 6 top quality cattle from Messrs Story, Newbiggin achieving 239.5ppk.
