PRIME SHEEP: The terrible weather conditions and the downward turn in trade nationwide hampered numbers. Those who braved the conditions were met with a trade far exceeding anybody’s expectations.
A plainer show of lambs across the board still manage to post an overall average of 211ppk (£90.88 per head) and which far exceeds levels seen in other outlets. Top spot today was clinched by Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Hexham who dominated the days highlights, their top this week being a single Dutch lamb which sold at £136 to Mr Robert Skelton. Other from this home selling away at £129 and £127 including the top pen of lambs per kilo at 283,3ppk. Messrs Wigham’s run of 41 Continental x lambs averaged £109.41 per head. Heavies sold to £124 for a pen of Texel lambs from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Irthington with a run averaging £114.33. Beltex topped at £115 for a pen from Messrs Hall, New Houses, Hallington with the run averaging £107.11 and to 275.9ppk pence for a pen from Messrs Little, The Hollands, Penton. Suffolks to £99 and 220ppk for a great pen from Messrs Bird, High Wreary Farm, Carlisle. Messrs Ritson, Baggra Yeat sold Mules to £94 with M/s Fisher, Reaygarth topping per kilo at 197.9ppk, with overall Mule wethers averaged £86.18.
More required in the coming weeks with Carlisle leading the way once more for all types, weights and grades.

PRIME BULLS: A large entry once again of 93 Prime bulls with trade marginally easier on the week for better quality bulls especially. Top overall was an exceptional Limousin from avid supporters of the mart Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna who received £1629.88 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith another good customer sold another to £1606.45 and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Maine Anjou bulls sold to £1587.19 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Simmental crosses for the same home achieved £1400.52. Top overall pence per kilo was a Limousin from Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby attaining 229.50p and was purchased by Bowland Foods. Dairy bred bulls sold to £1311.07 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie and was purchased by Jewitt Meats. Top pence per kilo of 181.5p was attained by Messrs Mitchinson, Beckstone, Carlisle for a Fleckvieh and Friesians to 170.5p from Messrs Preston, Wedholme House, Wigton again purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE: Again, numbers well short of requirements but a fantastic trade achieved throughout the sale of 34 Prime steers and heifers which saw in excess of 11 cattle sell to over £1650 to a top of £1751. Top overall was an outstanding Limousin x heifer from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth peaking at £1751 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle sold a British Blue cross to £1705.17. Top overall pence per kilo at 238.5p went to Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton with his exceptional Limousin crosses purchased again by Pioneer Foods. Steers from Messrs Lawson also peaked at £1740.81 and £1735.65. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith again with Limousin crosses topped his run at £1701.09. Top pence per kilo was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont who received 232.5p.
