On Monday 31st August, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock,

PRIME SHEEP:  The prime and cast sheep sale saw a fabulous entry of 3080 prime lambs and 307 cast sheep.

The largest show of the season so far did nothing to dampen trade with an overall average of 220ppk being achieved (SQQ 222.5p) which translates to £95.24 per head.  Well fleshed lambs sailed beyond 230ppk with ease, however a seam of “grassier” lambs through the sale did pull the average slightly despite them looking well sold pounds per head wise.  No fewer than 192 lots sold at or above £100.

Topping the sale at £126 was a great heavy Texel x lamb from M L Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton which sold to Robert Skelton.

A sensational pair of Dutch lambs from M/s Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle topped per kilo at 302.5p (40kg £121)

M/s Browell, Quarry House sold an outstanding pen of 72 Texel x lambs to average £118.44 to a top of £124 for a pen of 10 44kg lambs and a pen of 10 42kg from the same home at £123

Suffolk lambs sold to £119 from M/s JR & NG Smith, Westhills, Annan and to 231.7p for a pen from M/s Gardner, Glebelands, Roweltown.

Mule lambs sold to average £89.06 for 488 forward to a top of £107 from M/s Smith-Jackson, Hightown and to 208.8p for a pen from Kilnstown Farms Ltd.

CAST SHEEP: 307 Cast ewes were forward where trade for all classes would be sharper on the week with strong ewes showing the largest increase.  Topping the sale at £115.50 was a Leicester ewe from M/s Wigham, Hargill House.  Meaty Continental ewes regularly selling to £90 and over

PRIME BULLS: A small show due to the bank holiday and the upturn in good weather, had an entry for 46 forward, however a good trade was achieved for a very plain offering. Top overall was a Simmental from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie, receiving £1476.03 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Black and whites were very easily sold and topped at £1064.20 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton, Carlisle, purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Carlisle sold the top pence per kilo of 168.5ppk, purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A small show of only 34 prime steers and heifers were forward. Top overall was a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge Farm, Cockermouth and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top overall pence per kilo of 234.5ppk was achieved twice,  firstly  by Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle for their Limousin cross, purchased by Pioneer Foods, followed by Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge selling another Limousin to the same price, to King Street Butchers.

Steers sold to a top pence per kilo of 233.5ppk twice, firstly by Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, and secondly by Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie. Topping this sections overall was a Limousin cross from Nether Stenries Farm to Pioneer Foods.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A smaller show of 233 cast cows were on offer with all classes selling above vendors expectations. Maxwell Farming’s run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 797kg at 158.5p totalling £1263 to Jewitts. Messrs Dobson & Son, East View Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus cow for 832kg at 151.5p totalling £1260 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 797kg at 157.5p totalling £1255 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Field, The Bush sold the top priced Charolais x cow for 768kg at 156.5p totalling £1201 to Jame Gracey. Messrs Scott, Redesmouth Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus heifer for 172.5ppk to Les Fell.

Black and white cows were in great demand. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill’s run of Holstein x cows and heifers topped at 774kg at 152.5p totalling £1180 to James Gracey. Messrs Armstrong & Sons, Broomhills sold a Holstein x cow for 853kg at 137.5p totalling £1172 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae sold the top priced Montbeliarde x cow for 778kg at 148.5p totalling £1155 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Threlkeld, Ladywells sold a Holstein x cow for 832kg at 137.5p totalling £1144 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Baird, Redhall sold a Holstein x cow for 886kg at 127.5p totalling £1129 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Graham, Carleton Hill Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 775kg at 144.5p totalling £1119 to Dovecote Park. CAST BULLS: 18 stock bulls and over age bullocks were on offer. Messrs Rome & Co, Niven Hill sold the top price Limousin stock bull for 1022kg at 137.5p totalling £1405 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Young, Crummock Bank sold a Limousin stock bull for 972kg at 135.5p totalling £1317 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Armstrong, Netherhirst sold an overage British Blue x bullock for 712kg at 170.5p totalling £1213 to James Gracey.
