On Monday 7th September, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME SHEEP:

The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw a smaller show than expected however 2289 lambs and 283 ewes came forward and were met with a trade nothing short of astronomical, 26 outlets battled it out today providing plenty competition for all weights and grades.

An incredible 167 lots of sheep were over £100, of those 30 passed £120, in the pence per kilo stakes 65 lots passed 250p, all this with buyers saying we had a worse show on the week.

A sale average of 225p was posted for all weights and grades which equates to £97.45 per head that shows a rise of 60p per kilo on the year.

Topping the days trading at £139 was a single Dutch Texel x lamb from Messrs Musgrave, Sowerby Wood, which sold to A Wright & Son, Boston.  Peter & Denis sold 12 lambs to average £117.33 a head.  Top per kilo was a cracking Dutch lamb from Messrs Storey, Woodhead, Haltwhistle which sold at 305p to Mr R Skelton, Dearham; Messrs Storey averaged 273.97p per kilo for 25 lambs (£114.08 per head).

Top average of the day went to Messrs Moscrop, Ryeclose who sold 20 to level at £121 a further 8 vendors posted averages in excess of £110 a head

Beltex lambs sold to £135 for M/s Hall, New Houses, Hexham and to 297.4p from M/s Little, The Hollands. Texels topped at £138 from M/s Moscrop, Ryeclose who had others at £135 and to 286.4p for a beautiful pen from new recruit M/s W Miller, High Aketon, Wigton. Suffolks sold to £130 for heavies from M/s Longlands, Tone Hall, Hexham and to 231.6p from M/s Bird, High Wreay, Carlisle. Mule wethers averaged £91.30 to a top of £97 and 214.8p for a pen from M/s W&B Nichol, Lawston Farm, Newcastleton

CAST SHEEP: On Monday 7th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 283 cast sheep.  Trade showed a great increase in demand with ewes being exceptionally well bid for.  Topping the sale at £126.50 was a Texel ram from Messrs Smith, Roachburn, ewes topped at £119.50 for 2 Texel ewes from Messrs Hall, New Houses.

Mule ewes sold well to a top of £86.50 for 2 from Messrs Neve, Riggfoot and horned ewes selling very well to a top of £80.50 for a Blackface from Messrs Grieve, Whiteside and Swaledales to £66.50 for a pen of 15 from Messrs Smith, Roachburn.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger show of 102 Prime bulls forward with a sharper trade achieved throughout the sale for all classes.  Heading up the sale was a superb Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill, Workington achieving £1694 and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Simmental crosses to £1491.93 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and was purchased by Messrs Gracey, Aberdeen.  Top price per kilo of 226.5p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill and secondly by Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning both purchased by Bowland Foods.

Dairy bred bulls very easily sold and seen a day’s top of £1278.60 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and £1260 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie purchased by Messrs Capper, Glasgow.  Top overall pence per kilo of 189.5p attained by Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith with a Friesian and was again purchased by Messrs Capper.

PRIME CATTLE: A similar entry of 39 Prime steers and heifers forward maintaining a fantastic trade throughout.  Top overall was a superb Limousin cross steer from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton who achieved £1830.15 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton achieving a top of £1677.65 and Charolais crosses from Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport to £1601.15 purchased by Messrs McGimpsey, Annan.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel sold top pence per kilo steer of 234.5p for a Limousin cross and Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold the top Blonde cross to 232.5p.  Heifers sold to £1699.88 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold to £1641.51 and Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall, Penrith sold theirs to £1622.74.  Top pence per kilo was received by Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton selling a British Blue cross to 244.5p and purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.  Please advise entries for next weeks sale.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A large show of 325 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an increased ringside of buyers.

Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank sold a Limousin cow for 862kg, 172.5p, £1486 bought by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Mair, Meikleholm sold a Limousin cow for 796kg, 171.5p, £1365 also to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Williamson, Oulton Hall, sold the top priced Blonde cow for 728kg, 176.5p, £1284 to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Simmental cow for 906kg, 141.5p, £1281 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Rome & Co, Niven Hill sold a Limousin cow for 769kg, 166.5p, £1280 to Messrs Roberts.  Dinwoodie Green Farms sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 827kg, 153.5p, £1269 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Priestly, Cracrop sold a Limousin heifer for 583kg, 217.5p, £1268 to Steven Wilson.

A plain show of dairy cast cows were on offer with trade being good throughout.  Messrs Dart, Flothers sold Montbeliarde cross cows for 905kg, 143.5p, £1298 and 797kg, 138.5p, £1103 both bought by Dovecote Park.  Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 872kg, 137.5p, £1199 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Dickinson & Son, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 891kg, 127.5p, £1136 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank sold a Holstein cross heifer for 756kg, 149.5p, £1130 to Les Fell.  Messrs Robinson, Burtholme run of Holstein cross cows topped at 895kg, 125.5p, £1123 to Dovecote Park.  Seymour Farms sold a Montbeliarde cross cow for 791kg, 140.5p, £1111 to Messrs Roberts.  Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold a pure Friesian heifer for 636kg, 173.5p, £1103 to Capper Farming and a Friesian heifer for 171.5p also to Capper Farming.
