PRIME SHEEP: Another smashing number 3124 head were forward this week at the weekly sale of prime and cast sheep with fresh faces to Borderway coming week on week and even better still reaping the rewards and returning for more! A sale average of 214p (SQL 216,5p) is comparable to any outlet in the country levelling at £94.08 per head.
17 vendors saw their sheep average over 250ppk. Top of the day came for heavy Texel lambs from M/s Todd, Longhurst, Brampton who sold at £130 to Glenn Lomax with the run from M/s Longhurst averaging at £110.51. Top per kilo 290p for an exceptional Dutch Texel from M/s Storey, Woodhead, Haltwhistle selling to A Wright & Son, Boston. Suffolks to £106 from M/s McGregor, Dirrops, Lockerbie. A flying trade for Greyface lambs saw them level at 200p or £92.64 to £103 from M/s Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle

PRIME BULLS: A nice entry of 81 prime bulls forward with a good trade achieved throughout the sale. Top overall was a superb Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith achieving £1745 and was purchased by Michael & Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. The same vendor sold another to £1716 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Blondes sold to £1636 from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop, Penrith and again purchased by Bowland Foods. Charolais peaked at £1555 from Messrs Wright, Carwood, Biggar and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top overall pence per kilo of 226.5p was achieved three times all by Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington with two being purchased by Geoff Nutter and one by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Parthenais crosses sold to 220.5p from Messrs Bradley, Marina, Maryport and purchased by the Helliwell duo. Dairy bred bulls were very easily sold and saw a day’s top of £1170 for regular vendors Messrs Armstrong, Randalinton, Carlisle. Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie sold another to £1166. Top pence per kilo of 186.5p was paid to Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot, Canonbie for a Fleckvieh and Friesians to 175.5pph for Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith purchased by Wrights of Boston.

PRIME CATTLE: Numbers well short of requirements with only 20 forward, those who has cattle ready were well rewarded with traded peaking at £1778 for a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Gate, Hollins Farm, Cockermouth and another from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton to £1659. British Blues from Messrs Bowe also sold to £1758 and a Charolais cross from the same home were at £1615 all purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo steer was the British Blue cross from Messrs Bowe. 229.5p was achieved three times twice by Bothel Parks and once by Messrs Lockhart, Fauldingcleuch. Lockerbie and purchased by Wrights of Boston. Heifers peaked at £1513 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Pioneer Foods and the same vendor sold top overall pence per kilo of 240p to King Street Butchers. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A great show of 297 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer on Monday with trade being slightly less throughout. An outstanding Parthenais cow topped the day at 1024kg at 219.5p totalling £2247 from Messrs Duerden, Killarwick Grange, Dalton In Furness bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hutchinson, Bail Hill sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 805kg at 158.5p totalling £1275 bought on behalf of Messrs Worsley. Messrs Mair, Meikleholm Farm sold a Limousin cow for 710kg at 169.5p totalling £1203 bought by Bill Howard. Messrs Jardine, Newbiggin sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 815kg at 145.5p totalling £1185 to James Gracey. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot sold young Limousin cows and heifers for 207.5p to Rob Metcalf.
A plain show of dairy cast cows were on offer with all classes being less on the week. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein x cow for 940kg at 127.5p totalling £1198 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 788kg at 147.5p totalling £1162 to David Holmes and 944kg at 115.5p totalling £1090 to Michael Helliwell.
Messrs Cannon, Espland Hill sold a Holstein x cow for 876kg at 127.5p totalling £1116 and 729kg at 144.5p totalling £1053 to Dovecote Park and David Holmes. Messrs Bulman & Son, Bank House sold the top priced Friesian cow for 861kg at 127.5p totalling £1097.
