Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 28th September, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger entry of 475 cast cows bull and prime cattle, along with 2961 prime and cast sheep were forward.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger entry of 108 Prime bulls forward at the weekly sale whereby a fantastic trade was achieved throughout the sale for all shapes and sizes.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton achieving £1691.90 selling to Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold another to £1620.56 and was again bought by Bowland Foods.  Top pence per kilo of 235.5p was attained by Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods, the same vendors sold another to 228.5p and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Charolais crosses form Messrs Jarman, Brow Top Farm, Workington sold to 210.5p.  Black and white bulls peaked at £1233.63 and £1231.56 for Friesians from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie purchased by Bowland Foods and Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and top pence per kilo of 181.50p attained by Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton again for a Friesian,  More could have been sold, please ensure bulls are penned by 10.30 am

PRIME CATTLE: A small entry again of only 25 Prime steers and heifers forward with a flying trade throughout.  Many more are required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyers demands.  Top overall was a superb Limousin Cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie attaining £1669.63 purchased by Pioneer Foods.  British Blue crosses from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle sold to £1666.46.  Galloway steers sold to £1248.62 from Messrs Whitfield, Batey Shield, Haltwhistle.  Top price per kilo steer came from Hoddamtown achieving 237.50p.  Heifers very easy to sell once again and top overall was a quality Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby achieving £1534.39 and purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Another Limousin cross to £1446.39 from Messrs Blake, Halfwell, Penrith purchased by King Street Butchers.  Top overall pence per kilo of 245.5p was paid to Messrs Dent, Elm House for another quality Limousin cross heifer.  Please ensure Prime steers and heifers are penned by 10.45am.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A larger entry of 333 cast cows and stock bulls were forward to a great ringside of keen buyers, which ensures a great trade.

Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm run of 8 outstanding cows sold to average 794kg, 200ppk or £1588 and topped at 828kg, 216.5ppk or £1792 for a Charolais cross and to 835kg, 207.5ppk or £1732, and 838kg, 204.5ppk or £1713, and to 875kg, 193.5ppk or £1693 for British Blue crosses purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr.

Messrs Coates, Rainscar sold a British Blue cow for 851kg, 195.5ppk or £1663 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head Farm sold the top pence per kilo British Blue cow which sold for 711kg, 218.5ppk or £1553 purchased by Owain Llyr. Mr Bruce Goldie, Townfoot Farm run of cows topped at 880kg, 173.5ppk or £1526 for a Limousin cow purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Murray, The Throp run of Limousin cross cows topped at 768kg, 187.5ppk or £1440 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall sold a British Blue cross cow for 725kg, 192.5ppk or £1395 also purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Oliver, Cawfields run of cows topped at 217.5ppk for a Limousin cross heifer to Rob Medcalf. Messrs Johnstone & Sons, Low Flow also sold a Limousin cross heifer for 209.5ppk also to Rob Medcalf. Messrs Pearson, The Faulds sold a young Limousin cross cow for 199.5ppk purchased by Jewitts.

A large entry of black and white cows were on offer with trade being similar on the week. Messrs Beaty, Newton Field run of Holstein cross cows and heifers topped at 741kg, 159.5p, £1181 and to 653kg, 165.5ppk or £1080, and 642kg, 160.5ppk or £1030 purchased by Pickstocks and Les Fell. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein cross heifer for 711kg, 165.5ppk or £1176 to Les Fell. Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank sold a Holstein cross for 680kg, 167.5ppk or £1139 again to Les Fell. Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold a Holstein cross cow for 840kg, 127.5ppk or £1071 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Walker & Son, Marlborough Hall sold a Holstein cross for 720kg, 146.5ppk or £1054 to Pickstocks. Bays Leap Dairy Farm run of cows topped at 780kg, 133.5ppk or £1041 for a Holstein cross to Dovecote Park. Messrs Byers & Son, Woodslee sold a Holstein cross heifer for 633kg, 162.5ppk or £1028 to David Holmes.

CAST BULLS: A good entry for 12 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Hunter, Stoneraise Place selling a Limousin stock bull for 997kg, 149.5ppk £1490 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Atkinson & Son, Green Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 972kg, 148.5ppk or £1443 again to Owain Llyr. Messrs Eilbeck & Son, Plumbland Farm sold a Limosuin stock bull for 836kg, 150.5ppk or £1258 once again to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: Prime sheep had a larger entry of 2961 forward with an overall average of 205.5ppk (SQQ 212.04) which was up a massive 46.26ppk on the same sale last year.

Top price of the day was a black Beltex lamb from Danny & James Lawson, Pasture House Farm, Bolton Low Houses, Wigton which topped the fantastic run of prime sheep at £136. Chasing closely behind was a Texel from Shankbridge End Farms, Heathersgill which realised a close second at £135.

A very mixed quality was forward throughout, well with fed lambs paying a very noticeable premium.

The top pence per kilo was paid for a pen of 3 Beltex lambs as part of a tremendous run from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston who peaked at 304.9ppk for 41kgs resulting in £125.  This home consigned 36 Beltex lambs to average £120.56 (267.8ppk)

Well fed Mule lambs and horned lambs were also very well sold with a pen of 10 Mule weathers from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Melkridge, Haltwhistle selling to £98.50 and Blackfaced lambs from Messrs Carruthers, Peel a Hill, Bewcastle selling to £88.

CAST SHEEP: A large entry of 368 cast ewes and rams were forward with well fleshed sheep continuing to sell well topping todays sale at £138 for a cracking Beltex ram from Messrs Lawson, Pasture House.  Ewes topped at £108 twice firstly for a Beltex from the same good home and a texel from Messrs Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall.
