On Monday 5th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS: A large entry of 116 prime bulls forward saw a good trade throughout the sale. Top overall was a superb Limousin which made Messrs Milroy, Cairnwhins Farms, Girvan’s journey south well worth while receiving £1723.94 and was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton sold another to £1705.53 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie who also bought the best of Messrs Wight, Whitrigghill, Melrose’s run of Limousin bulls peaking at £1620.09. Blonde crosses sold to £1505.37 from Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop, Penrith purchased by Jewitt Meats and Charolais to £1501.99 from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Top overall pence per kilo of 224.5p was attained by Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton for a Limousin cross and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Messrs Wight, Whitrigghill to 223.5p (x2) purchased by the same company and Bowland Foods. Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1276.50 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie and purchased by Jewitt Meats and top price per kilo of 177.5p for a Friesian from Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle again purchased by Jewitt Meats.

A slightly larger entry of 28 prime steers and heifers forward achieving an outstanding trade throughout for all classes sold.
Numbers are well short of requirements and vendors are urged to take full use of the current trade. Top overall was a show stopping Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie receiving £1747.03 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blues to £1657.98 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle and Charolais to £1635.10 from Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport. Top price per kilo and top overall price per kilo of 247.5 was attained by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and again purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.
Heifers proved a marvellous trade throughout also and were seen to peak at £1498.63 from Messrs Dent, Elm House once again and purchased again by Pioneer Foods. Charolais crosses for Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands, Maryport selling to £1439.40 and purchased by King Street Butchers, this same vendor also sold top price per kilo of 244.5p for a Limousin cross and was bought by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A large show of 320 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with a good ringside of buyers ensuring a great trade. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses’ run of cows topped at 1006kg at 155.5p totalling £1564 for a Charolais cow bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Clark & Son, Cringleber’s run of cows topped at 998kg at 144.5p totalling £1442 for a Charolais and 838kg at 167.5p totalling £1403 for a Limousin both bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Sparke & Son, Little Swinburne sold a Limousin x cow for 681kg at 204.5p totalling £1392 bought be Owain Llyr. Messrs Wigham, Hargill House’s run of cows topped at 791kg at 174.5p totalling £1380 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Struthers, Greenbank Farm sold the top priced Blue x cow for 727kg at 188.5p totalling £1370 to Owain Llyr. Hoddom & Kinmount Farms sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 904kg at 139.5p totalling £1261 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cowin, The Ash sold a Limousin x heifer for 206.5p to Jewitt Meats and a Blue x cow for 178.5p. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a pure Limousin heifer for 193.5p. Messrs Storey & Son, Woodhead Farm sold a Limousin cow for 183.5p. Messrs Martin, Shillafield sold a Simmental x heifer for 181.5p.
A plain show of dairy x cows was on offer with Castlesteads Farms selling a Holstein x heifer for 689kg at 159.5p totalling £1098 to Les Fell. Messrs Barrow & Sons, Helm Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 653kg at 164.5p totalling £1074 also to Les Fell. Messrs Andrew Graham, Kirkhouse sold the top priced Fleckvieh x cow for 812kg at 127.5p totalling £1035 to Steven Bowes. Hardgrove Farms sold a Holstein x cow for 878kg at 117.5p totalling £1031 and 800kg at 125.5p totalling £1006 bought by Dovecote Park and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Cannon, Espland Hill sold a Holstein x for 697kg at 146.5p totalling £1021 to David Holmes.

The weekly sale of prime lambs had a smaller entry forward on the week with 2000 head forward. Despite less top drawer sheep in the market an average of 201ppk was achieved for all weights and grades with buyers still crying out for more flesh. This saw a very 2 tiered trade, an overall average north of £2 a kilo in October…. Not bad is it!
Three vendors share the top spot this week all achieving £124 firstly for Beltex lambs from A & A Little, Hollands, Carlisle and AG Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie and also for a pen of 11 Texels from JM Carruthers & Son, Grassgarth, Welton who showed lambs in Carlisle for the first time in three years, another new face CD Timm, West Farm, Pickering followed closely behind at £121 and £120 with local supporters R & BS Laird selling at £1212 and WC Bell, Low Houses at £120. M/s Little, Hollands also consigned the leading lambs per kilo at 317.9p for Beltex
