On Monday 12th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A larger entry for 529 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 2355 prime and cast sheep.
PRIME BULLS: Another large show of 106 bulls forward with quality well down on the week seeing big numbers of Dairy bred types forward which in return lessened the trade.
Top overall came from local farmers Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Bampton with an exceptional Limousin selling to £1825.84 and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.
Charolais sold to £1498.14 for Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries and purchased by Messrs Helliwell, Rochdale.
Simmentals topped at £1466.18 for Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.
Top pence per kilo of 226.5p was attained by Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick selling their Limousins to Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.
Dairy breds, as mentioned previously, were out in force and reached a top of £1153 for a Fleckvieh for Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot, Canonbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Friesian sold to £1098 for Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie purchased by Messrs Capper, Glasgow. Top pence per kilo was for another Fleckvieh for Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot to 183.5p and Friesians to 163.5p for Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE: An increased show of 31 Prime steers and heifers forward seeing a fantastic trade throughout once again due to the national shortage of Prime beef. Top overall was a Limousin Cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton selling to £1712.34 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie sold another to £1653.23. Top price per kilo of 239.5p was received by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby purchased again by Pioneer Foods. The same vendors also sold top overall heifer to 240.5p totalling £1548.82 for Limousin crosses. Messrs Pearson, High Plasketlands, Maryport sold another to 237.5p purchased by King Street Butchers. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: the largest show of 403 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer, to the usual large ringside of buyers. With quality cows in great demand, however plainer beef cows were less money.

Mr Tom Pearson, The Faulds sold a British Blue cow for 762kg, 207.5ppk or £1581 to Mr David Holmes. DA Harrison, Hill House Farm run of cows topped at 844kg, 177.5ppk or £1498 for a Limousin cross to Mr Kirkpatrick. Mr Little, Greenhill Farm run of cows topped at 773kg, 177.5ppk to £1372 to Mr Holmes. Messrs Hewitson, Fordclose sold a Limosuin crow cow for 891kg, 152.5ppk or £1358 to Mr Roberts. Messrs Cadzow & Co, Duncrahill Farm run of ¾ Limosuin cows topped at 737kg, 179.5ppk to £1322 and to 835kg, 157.5ppk or £1315, and to 669kg, 191.5ppk or £1281 to Owain Llyr and Jewitts. Other young ¾ Limousin cows from the same home sold for 188.5ppk, 185.5ppk, and 182.5ppk (x3). Mr Bruce Goldie, Townfoot run of cows topped at 692kg, 187.5ppk or £1297 to Jewitts.

PRIME SHEEP: 2355 head of prime sheep were forward at the weekly sale with a much improved show in terms of finish this week which was met with spirited bidding from the offset this resulting in an overall average of 209p. Export sheep sold extremely well to level at 223p. 133 lots sold over £100 with 38 of these over £110. Lots of sheep sold over 250p. Top per head was £132 paid for a single lamb from M/s Urwin, Hill House, Kirklinton selling to Tony Harrison Butchers, Main Street, Cockermouth. M/s Urwin sold his run of 13 lambs to average £122.54 (278.98ppk)
Top per kilo was 310.3p paid for Beltex lambs from BJ Harrison, Beck Farm, Wigton selling to Mr R Skelton. M/s Storey, Woodhead sold an amazing run of 42 Dutch Texel lambs to a top of £127 for a pen of 8 to level at £118.19 (278.17ppk)
