On Monday 26th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: The weekly sale of bulls had a great entry of 83 forward. Topping the sale was a Limosuin bull from Greentower Farms Ltd, selling to £2086.88 to Bowland Foods. Followed by another Limousin consigned by Messrs Goldie, Townfoot selling to £2054 also to Bowland Foods.

Topping the pence per kilo section was a Limousin from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm selling to 224.5ppk to Mr Ralph Pearson. British Blues peaked at £220.5ppk from Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill to Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 43 prime steers and heifers were forward, with trade being good throughout , although some classes were easier on the week.

Top overall was a superb black Limousin cross steer from Messrs RJ Harrison, Aikhead, Wigton, who attained £1814 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Charolais crosses sold to £1648 from Messrs Wilson, Bowscales Farm, Maryport. Top pence per kilo of 235.5ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton with his Limousin cross and secondly by Messrs Harrison, Aikhead, Wigton with another Limousin.

Heifers sold to a day’s top of £1597.35 from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, with a Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor sold the top priced Charolais cross to £1587.95. Top overall pence per kilo was a superb Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Millburn, Wall End, Brampton, who received 239.5ppk and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle sold another to 237.5ppk and was purchased by King Street Butchers.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A large offering of 356 cast cows and bulls forward to the usual large attendance of 18 buyers around Borderway’s weekly sale of cows. Trade was brisk throughout with vendors delighted with their returns. Cows were seen to achieve a day’s top of £1785.51 for a Limousin from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith with Haas Side Farms, Lockerbie selling another to £1652.49 both purchased by Owain Llyr. British Blue cows sold to £1528.29 from Messrs Coates, Rainscar, Settle. Top price per kilo cow was for the aforementioned from Haas Side Farms who achieved 213.5ppkg with Messrs Jenkinson selling to 207.5ppkg. The British Blue cows sold to 203.5ppkg and 199.5ppkg both for Rainscar Farm. Dairy bred cows were very easily sold with a day’s top of £1114.16 for a Holstein Friesian from Evening Hill Farm Ltd, Carlisle and was purchased by Dovecote Park Ltd. Friesians from Messrs Armstrong, Dykesfield Farm, Carlisle peaked at £1102.73 again purchased by Dovecoate Park. Top pence per kilo of 162.5 was received by Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands, Carlisle and purchased by Messrs Fell, Settle

CAST BULLS: 11 cast bulls forward and were seen to sell to a top of £1588.13 for a Limousin from Messrs Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbett, Jedburgh and top pence per kilo of 167.5 was paid to Messrs Spedding, Stone Flatts, Carlisle for another Limousin stock bull.

PRIME SHEEP: 2358 prime and cast sheep were forward with a decent turn out of prime lambs despite weather conditions and a dip in trade going against the them, those who braved both would be more than happy with their rewards with an overall average of 203 and SQQ 217.5p showing a fantastic return.

CAST SHEEP: At the weekly sale 300 cast ewes and rams were forward with trade being dearer on the week for all classes.  Topping todays sale at £98.50 was a Suffolk cross ewe from Messrs Johnstone, Springfield Farm.  Horned ewes sold well topping at £50 for a pen of 11 from Messrs Smith, Roachburn.  Mules topped at £82 from Messrs Armstrong, Shankfield Head.  Large sheep regularly achieved £90 plus.
