On Monday 2nd November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller show of only 70 prime bulls forward saw a good trade throughout and many more could have been sold.  Less heavy and top-quality bulls on offer nevertheless Messrs Wilshaw, Oulton Hall, Wigton sold two of their quality bulls and were rewarded taking home £1734.89 and £1602.98 for Blonde crosses both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Bowe, Midtown, Wigton sold the top Limousin cross at £1685.62 again purchased by Bowland Foods.  Top overall pence per kilo of 233.5p was received by Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton selling their Limousin and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington sold another to 227.5p purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Dairy bred bulls also better to sell on the week peaking at £1217.05 for a Fleckvieh for Messrs Graham, Laws Hall, Longtown with the same vendor also selling top Holstein Friesian to £1157.60 both purchased by Jewitts Meats, Spennymoor.  Laws Hall also had top overall price per kilo of 179.5p for the forementioned Fleckvieh whilst Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton sold Friesian to 176.5p purchased by Bowland Foods.  Please advise entries for next week’s sale.

PRIME CATTLE: A similar entry of 43 prime steer and heifers forward achieving a good trade throughout the sale.  Top overall came from Cockermouth farmer, Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge who received £1708.53 for a marvellous Limousin cross heifer which was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Charolais heifers to £1674.20 from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries and British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby achieving a top of £1536.63.  This heifer was also top overall pence per kilo of 237.5p.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold top Limousin cross to 235.50.  Steers were seen to peak at £1700.60 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and £1689.50 for another from the same home both purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top pence per kilo of 231.5p was achieved twice firstly by Bothel Parks and secondly by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.  Please advise entries for next week’s sale.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A large entry of 373 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer on Monday with a weathered show of cows being forward and trade being steady. Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns sold a Parthenais cow for 781kg at 208.5p totalling £1628 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Graham, Miller Hill’s run of cows topped at 741kg at 187.5p totalling £1389 for a Limousin x bought by Owain Llyr. DA Harrison & Co’s run of cows topped at 720kg at 186.5p totalling £1342 for a Limousin x to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Common & Son, Crossdykes Farm sold a Limousin x heifer for 677kg at 195.5p totalling £1323 also to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Forrester, Down-By-Rigg sold a British Blue cow for 882kg at 149.5p totalling £1318 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm sold a Limousin heifer for 627kg at 207.5p totalling £1301 to Sean McGimpsey.

A plainer show of dairy cast cows was on offer. Messrs Johnston, Cote House sold two Holstein x heifers for 722kg at 154.5p totalling £1116 and 712kg at 1498.5p totalling £1057 both bought by Les Fell. Messrs Bulman & Son, Bank House’s run of Friesian heifers sold for 646kg at 168.5p totalling £1088, 637kg at 168.5p totalling £1073(x2) all bought by Les Fell. Messrs Naylor, Hill Green sold a Holstein x cow for 933kg at 113.5p totalling £1058 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein x cow for 853kg at 123.5p totalling £1053 to Dovecote Park. Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae sold a Holstein x cow for 822kg at 125.5p totalling £1031 to Dovecote Park.

CAST BULLS: Only 4 stock bulls were on offer on Monday. Messrs Dixon, Westfield Cottage sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 955kg at 127.5p totalling £1217 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP:

Another good show of prime lambs forward this week in the main being midweight first cross or Mules, this did nothing to the ferocity of the trade with all weights, grades and breeds levelling at 210ppk with an SQQ of 219.5ppk this translates to £95.62 which is £14.48 ahead of last year’s sale.  Heavy lambs in particular saw a large rise on the week.  M/s Scott, Thirlwall Castle claimed both the top price per head and top per kilo with separate lots of Dutch Texel lambs. The sale leader at £132 was a 42kg lamb selling to Mr R Skelton they also sold 2 pairs at £130 a head which included the leading price per kilo at 313.3p all selling to Mr R Skelton. M/s Scott sold 38 lambs to average £115.85 a head and 253.69p per kilo.

Heavy lambs sold to a top of £120 for Texels from Cochraines Nurseries, Longtown and R S Laird, Unity Farm, Suffolks sold to £119 for heavies from M/s Fell, Harley Croft, Torpen and 222.2p for 45kgs from JJ Brough, Clappers, Aspatria

Mules sold to £93 for a pen of 42kg from WH & DA Gass, Nunscleugh, Roweltown and to 201.1p for a pen of 23 44kg lambs from WM & C Wallace, Gapshields, Brampton

200 cast ewes forward and trade was on fire for all classes with numbers being harder to find. Topping todays sale at £127.50 for a Texel cross ewe from M/s Graham, Hillhead.  Meaty ewes of all types sold extremely well with Mules topping at £85.5 from M/s Farrell, Low Moor and horned ewes to £64.5 from M/s Graham, Hillhead.  Consignments of 16 Continental ewes from M/s Gardner sold to average £102.31.
