An entry of 76 bulls were forward and topped at £1849.43 for a Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Others to £1847.80 from Messrs Bunting, Midtown, Dumfries and £1819.76 Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan. Simmental crosses from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House achieved £1615.09. Top overall pence per kilo of 245.50p was received by Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle for a Limousin cross purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. The same home sold another to 243.5p and was purchased by Wrights of Boston,
Dairy bred bulls also sold fantastically well and were seen to peak at £1290.61 from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle for a Holstein Friesian purchased by Wrights of Boston. Top overall was an outstanding Limousin heifer from Messrs Beaty, Langhorn, Egremont receiving £1733.55 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald Farm, Dumfries sold another pair of marvellous bred Charolais cross heifers to £1700.13 and £1681.37 again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top over pence per kilo of 244.5p was paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan for a British Blue cross and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Steers sold to a top of £1713.10 and £1678.04 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods. CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE: A small entry of 242 cast cows and stock bulls was forward on Monday with plainer cows being slightly sharper on the week. Mr George Wilson, Reddings Farm’s Limousin cows topped at 703kg at 174.5p totalling £1226 bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Craik, Red Castle Farm’s run of Limousin cows topped at 823kg at 144.5p totalling £1189, 768kgs at 146.5p totalling £1125, 759kg at 147.5p totalling £1119 and 792kg at 139.5p totalling £1104 purchased by Steve Bowes and Charles Kirkpatrick. Crowhall Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 944kg at 124.5p totalling £1175 to Les Fell. Messrs Weatherson, Edges Green sold the top priced British Blue x cow for 687kg at 164.5p totalling £1130 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Emslie, Kinknockie sold the top priced Charolais cow for 746kg at 146.5p totalling £1092 to Owain Llyr.
A better show of black and white cows was forward with plainer sorts slightly sharper on the week but well fleshed types less on the week. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein x heifer for 721kg at 151.5p totalling £1092 to Les Fell. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 861kg at 119.5p totalling £1028 to Les Fell. At the weekly sale of prime and cast sheep numbers were well back on last week with a large percentage of heavy sheep forward the sale levelled at 206p with heavies better to sell throughout.
Joe and Becky Harrison topped the sale with an exceptional 40kg lamb selling at £126 (315ppk) to Mr R Skelton. Beltex lambs topped per kilo at 315.8p for a pen of 3 from A & A Little, Hollands, Preston selling to Mr R Skelton. J McCrone, Beech Croft sold a real run of export types to £121 to average £114.94 (282.71ppk). Heavies sold to £120 from CM Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie whose run of 124 lambs averaged 48kg at £105.06. Suffolks sold to £104 for a pen from Messrs Hunter, Stoneraise, Wigton and to 210.2p from RA Crichton, Rottington, West Cumbria. Mules again sold very well to £95 from Messrs Donald, Denton Mains, Brampton and to 195.4p from Messrs MG Farrell, Low Moor, Penrith.
