Borderway Primstock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 21st October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep.  A smaller show of 345 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle, along with 2399 cast and prime sheep were forward.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A smaller number of 229 cast cows and stock bulls were forward to a larger ring side of buyers, ensuring all classes being 10p up on the week despite deadweight prices falling.

Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall great run of Limousin x cows topped at 823kg, 161.5p, £1329 and 685kg, 163.5p £1119 purchased by Owain Llyr and Jewitts.  Messrs Norman, Little Orton run of Limousin cows topped at 761kg, 143.5p £1092 to Messrs Worsley.  Mr Edward Dean, Kirkhouse Farm run of cows topped at 837kg, 127.5p £1067 and a heifer sold for 171.5p bought by Messrs Roberts and Steven Bowes.  Messrs Beattie, Ratlinggate Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 683kg, 153.5p £1048 to Owain Llyr.

A better show of black and whites cows were on offer with again trade being a good 10p up on the week.  Messrs Smithson, Skelcies Hall, sold three over aged black and white bullocks for 737kg, 136.5p £1006 and £747 128.5p, £959 both bought by Les Fell also 684kg 128.5p £878 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Bulman & Son, Bank House run of Friesian cows topped at 815kg, 115.5p £941 bought by Dovecote Park.   Messrs Baird, Red Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 843kg, 105.5p £889 to Les Fell.  Bowe Dairy Farming Co run of Holstein x cows topped at 837kg, 104.5p £874, 816kg, 105.5p £860 both purchased by Dovecote Park.  Messrs Chapelhow, High Grounds sold a Holstein x cow for 683kg, 129.5p £859 to Les Fell.  Messrs Marrs & Sons, Croft Farm, sold a Friesian cow for 791kg, 108.5p £858 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Wadsworth & Sons, Big Balcraig Farm, run of Holstein x cows topped at 711kg, 120.5p £856 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – A good number of 75 bulls were forward with all classes certainly dearer on the week.  Topping the sale was an outstanding Bazadaise from Mr R E Miller, West Farm, Aspatria selling to the price of £1666.67 selling to Ralph Pearson, Bradford.  Limousin bulls were sold to the price of £1523.53 from Norman Farming Company.  British Blue bulls were sold to 1536.65 from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Birgham to Mr Morgan Halliwell.

Topping the pence per kilo was a Limousin bull from PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby selling to 214.5p again to Mr Ralph Pearson.  Second price came from A & L Gott, Cockermouth selling to 213.5p to Bowland Foods.  Many more could have been sold to an increasing ringside of buyers.

PRIME CATTLE – A smaller show of 41 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling to a dearer trade on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth, selling to £1583 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold a British Blue heifer to £1508 also to Pioneer Foods.

Top overall pence per kilo of 235.5ppk was attained by Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith for a Limousin cross, purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, Appleby sold another to 233.5ppk, purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold another to the same price, this time purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.

Steers peaked at £1580 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont, and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Charolais crosses sold to £1576 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle, and British Blues to £1555.72from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby.

Topping the Steer pence per kilo of 226.5ppk was Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan, purchased by Pioneer Foods.

PRIME SHEEP – At the weekly prime sheep sale another good entry 2399 head of prime and cast sheep were forward.

Well finished types sold well for all weights and grades, however, leaner types were forward in greater numbers and proved harder to place resulting in an overall average of £74.55 per head.  The sale topped at £105.80 for an excellent pen of 8 Beltex lambs which were shown by Messrs Hall, New Houses, Hexham, these sheep also topped the price per kilo at 254.9p and were purchased by Mr R Skelton.

Mule lambs continue to sell well with a top of £75.70 achieved by Mr J A Ritson, Baggra Yeat, Wigton and an average of £70.49 for the full entry.
