At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 17th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a larger show of 581 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and a smaller entry of 1868 prime sheep forward.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 465 cast cows and stock bulls were forward, with a plainer show of cattle on offer, resulting in the well fleshed cows being in high demand.
Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 822kg, 213.5ppk or £1754 and was purchased by Owain Llyr. Kedzlie Farms run of outstanding cows topped at 896kg, 178.5ppk or £1599 for a Limousin cross cow and to 820kg, 183.5ppk or £1504 for a British Blue cross cow purchased by Mr Sean McGimpsey, with Limousin cows selling for 214.5ppk to Mr Kenny McCreary. Kedzlie Farms sold the top priced Charolais cow which sold for 804kg, 175.5ppk or £1411 also to Mr McCreary. Messrs Bowe & Sons, Foulskyke Farm run of Blonde cows topped at 800kg, 186.5ppk or £1492 and to 749kg, 192.5ppk or £1441 both of which were purchased by Owain Llyr. Kedzlie Farms sold a Luing heifer for 190.5ppkto Mr James Gracey.
A plain show of black and white cows were on offer, however all classes sold well. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 769kg, 143.5ppk or £1103 to Mr Les Fell, who also purchased Messrs Speddings, Stone Flatts Holstein cross cow which sold for 756kg, 143.5ppk or £1084. Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 768kg, 136.5ppk or £1048 to Roberts. Messrs Coulthard, Laversdale Farm sold the top priced British Friesian cow, which sold for 729kg, 143.5ppk or £1046 to Mr Malcolm Allan. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw run of cows topped at 872kg, 119.5ppk or £1042 for a Montbeliarde cross and was purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Little, & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Holstein cross cow for 807kg, 126.5ppk or £1026 to Dawn Meats.
Others heifers sold to 154.5ppk and 149.5ppk for Holstein crosses from Low Wood Dairy. Others to 147.5ppk from Messrs Bowker, Rigghead, and to 145.5ppk from Messrs Spedding, Stone Flatts. Montbeliarde crosses to 153.5ppk from Messrs Magnay, Greenwrae, and others to 141.5ppk from Messrs Willey, Broomfield Farm.
A good show of 13 stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm selling the top priced Limousin stock bull for 763kg, 185.5ppk or £1415 to Mr Kevin McCreary. Valley Fields sold the top priced Simmental stock bull which sold for 923kg, 142.5ppk or £1315 also to Mr McCreary. Messrs Noble, Mill Farm sold the top priced Blondestock bull, which sold for 894kg, 144.5ppk or £1291 to Owain Llyr.

Prime Bulls: A smaller entry of 71 prime bulls were forward, with all classes remaining a good steady trade. Top overall was a Limousin cross from first time vendors Messrs Hubbock, Rising Sun, Hexham who received £1686 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Simmentals sold to £1636.34 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan.
Top overall pence per kilo of 227.55ppk was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Little, Guards, Carlisle and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, and secondly by Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne, Hexham and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. British Blues sold to 221.5ppk from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory Farm, Carlisle, again purchased by Bowland Foods.
Black and whites peaked at £1084.18 from Messrs Little, Kirkbride, Wigton and to a top overall of 179.5ppk from the same good home.

Prime Cattle: A similar entry of 41 prime steers and heifers were forward with all classes selling very well on the week. Top overall was an outstanding Charolais cross steer from Messrs TB Taylor, Northholm of Grange, Lanark, who achieved £1839.64 and was purchased by Kenny McCreary, Ireland. Top British Blue cross was from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle and top priced Limousin cross came from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle, both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo was a Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton achieving 232.5ppk and 231.5ppk.
Heifers seen a day’s top of £1528.07 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top British Blue cross came from the same home and peaked at £1457.33. Top overall pence per kilo was a super Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton, achieving 236.5ppk and was purchased by Whittaker, The Butchers, Accrington.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – The weekly sale of prime sheep had a smaller entry of 1530 lambs and 350 ewes forward. Well fleshed sheep sold well into the £80’s and beyond, or to 180ppk plus for commercial types.
Top price of the day was £96.80 and was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs TP Wigham, Hargill House, Coanwood for seven Dutch Texels, and secondly by Messrs J Oliver & Sons, Walton Woodhead, Brampton with a pen of eight Beltex, with both pens being purchased by Mr A Dawson. Messrs J Oliver & Sons pen also topped the pence per kilo at 220ppk.
Cast ewes remained a good trade and sold to a top of £107.50 for a pair of Texel ewes from Messrs M Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport.
