Borderway Sale of Store & Weanling Cattle & Suckled Calves

Harrison & Hetherington had forward over 1100 head of cattle at their weekly Wednesday sale comprising of 862 Catalogued Store Cattle, Suckled Calves and un-entered Store Bulls and Stirks, 201 Calves together with 123 Dairy Cattle forward in the Borderway Month Day Sale.

Borderway was buzzing with activity as 4 rings were in operation catering for over 200 vendors and 180 active buyers, once again cementing Carlisle as the place to market all classes of rearing, store, finishing and dairy cattle in the North of England.

STORE CATTLE – At the weekly sale of 437 store cattle where the usual packed ringside of buyers were in attendance.  Strong and best sorts were easily sold, however smaller weathered cattle proved more challenging to place.  The top price of the day went to a Simmental x bullock from Messrs Robson, Merryshields, Capheaton, Hexham selling to £1270.  Heifers sold to £1255 for a British Blue x consigned by Messrs McKie, Lawrence Holme, Oulton, Wigton,

SUCKLED CALVES – A good show of 286 suckled calves were forward with a large ring side of buyers which ensured that all classes being good to sell.  Messrs Mattinson & Son, Burthwaite sold two Limousin x bullocks at 11 months of age for £1110.  Messrs Noble, Mill Farm run of Blonde bullocks topped at £1100 for an 8 month old.

WEANED CATTLE: An entry of 212 weaned cattle were on offer with more buyers forward making all cattle well bid for.  Top price on the day was £1030 achieved twice both in the bull section.  Firstly from Allan Young, Croft House Farm, Ireby for a tremendous Blue cross bull and later in the sale a Limousin bull from Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill Farm, Wigton.  Messrs Eve following pen of 3 Limousin bull sold at £1010 with their run of cattle averaging £1015.

Steers and heifers also sold much better on the week with all vendors much happier with their trade.
