Borderway Store and Weaned Cattle Sale

27th June 2018

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had forward 923 head of cattle at their weekly Wednesday sale at Borderway, comprising of 625 catalogued store cattle, un-entered store bulls and stirks and 298 calves.

An excellent entry for midsummer, and despite grass work and clipping being a priority for many customers, a large company of buyers were in attendance for all classes.

STORE CATTLE –  At the weekly sale, 415 store cattle were forward with less buyers around the ring side than previous weeks.  Strong cattle remained good to sell, however, smaller, younger sorts proved harder to cash.  The sale topped at £1335 for a fantastic Aberdeen Angus x bullock shown by Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, Whitehaven.  Heifers sold to £1245 for a very smart Limousin x consigned by Messrs Whitfield, Orton Rigg, Carlisle.

WEANERS –  A smaller entry of 210 weaned cattle seeing trade more selective due to the dry weather and a quieter ring side of buyers.  Size proved best to sell but saw grazing cattle harder to cash due to the shortage of grass at the moment.

Topping the sale was a tremendous Limousin bull from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, peaking the bull section at £1090 with his following bulls making £1000 (x2) £970 and £940.  Messrs Walton, Preston Mains Farm, Preston sold a Simmental x bull for £1040.
