Harrison & Hetherington Ltd had an entry of over 1200 head at their Weekly Wednesday Sale of Cattle comprising of 810 Catalogued Store cattle and Un-entered stirks, 303 Calves and 103 Dairy cattle in the Month Borderway Dairy Day. All rings experienced a very busy day and trade for all cattle was strong.
STORE CATTLE – An entry of 604 store cattle were forward this week which incorporated the first Annual Early Spring Show along with a Special section for native cattle.
The first Early Spring show of cattle drew some wonderful entries for the Judge, Mr J Critchley, Mercer Farm, Preston to cast his eye over. Taking the Championship rosette was the first prize bullock, a 12 month old Limousin cross shown by Messrs JC & SE Little, The Guards which later went on to sell for £1200 to Mr D Anderson, Crosby. Standing in Reserve was the 1st Prize Limousin heifer again consigned by Messrs Little and twin sister to the Champion. She sold to £1140 to Mr N Dixon, Thursby.
Topping the sale at £1435 was an outstanding British Blue x from Messrs J & N Beattie, Woodfield, Annan who’s marvellous run averaged £1410 a head. Heifers sold to £1205 for a great Limousin x from Messrs Slack, Newby. A feature of the sale was an outstanding consignment of 30 young Limousin x bullocks and heifers from first time vendor J Hunter & Sons, Steel Farm, Hexham with a pen of two Limousin x bullocks topping their run at £1235 to average £1149.58

WEANERS- In the weanling section saw a slightly smaller show of cattle and demand was good from start to finish. Top price on the day was for a pair of Simmental x bulls from Messrs Goldsbrough, Oakrigg Farm, Moffat peaking the sale at £1300. There was some very nice runs of Limousin x and Charolais x heifers and steers. Topping at £1200 was a good strong bullock from Messrs Thompson, Edenbanks, Cumwhitton with other Charolais bullocks from Messrs Watson, Oakbank at £1035 and Messrs Langcake, Isel Old Park selling at £1025. Grazing cattle once again proved popular and saw a very strong ringside of buyers. The dairy bull trade was much dearer on the week seeing a pen of 8 Holstein Friesians at 7 months old selling for a very good £415 from Messrs Weightman, High Wood Nook, Wigton.
