Borderway Weekly Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 29th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A large show of 615 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle and 1742 cast and prime sheep were forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 423 cast cows were forward to extra buyers, which ensured all classes were sharper on the week. Mr Keith Harryman, Keskadale Farm sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 985kg, 191.5ppk or £1886. Messrs Mather, Beech Bank run of cows topped at 864kg, 185.5ppk or £1602 for a Limousin cross. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor run of Limousin cows topped at 945kg, 155.5ppk or £1469, and to 934kg, 156.5ppk or £1461 and finally to 845kg, 171.5ppk or £1449. Mr Steven Ball, Manor Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow, which sold for 964kg, 143.5ppk or £1383. Messrs Mather, Beech Bank sold the top priced British Blue cross cow, which sold for 747kg, 180.5ppk or £1348. Messrs Kearton, Wyse Hill Farm sold a British Blue cross heifer for 189.5ppk. Messrs Little, The Guards sold the top priced Limousin cross heifer for 184.5ppk. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm Limousin cows topped at 722kg, 184.5ppk or £1332. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor sold Limousin heifers to 184.5ppk, 183.5ppk. Messrs Corlett, Skiddaw View sold a Limousin cross cow for 182.5ppk. Messrs Bird, High Wreay Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 182.5ppk.

A good run of black and white cows were on offer with all classes being a great trade.

Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross for 840kg, 147.5ppk or £1250. Messrs Hurford, The Bramery sold a Holstein cross for 903kg, 137.5ppk or £1241. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a Holstein cross for 907kg, 127.5ppk or £1156 and to 827kg, 127.5ppk or £1054. Messrs Pollock Faulds Farm sold a Holstein cross for 878kg, 127.5ppk or £1119. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm run of Holstein cross cows topped at 858kg, 125.5ppk or £1076. Messrs Marrs & Sons, Croft Farm sold the top priced British Friesian cow for 767kg, 137.5ppk or £1054. Messrs Denwood, Julian Holme sold a Holstein cross for 814kg, 129.5ppk or £1054. Messrs Elwen, Netherfield Farm sold a Holstein cross for 846kg, 123.5ppk or £1044. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a Holstein cross for 798kg, 130.5ppk or £1041. Messrs Henderson & Son, Parkhouse sold a Holstein cross for 836kg, 124.5ppk or £1040. Messrs Donald & Son, The beeches sold a Holstein cross for 751kg, 138.5ppk or £1040. Messrs Moore, Brayshaw sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 765kg, 135.5ppk or £1036.

A small show of 6 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Kearson, Wyse Hill farm selling two Limousin stock bulls for 1119kg, 152.5ppk, £1706 and to £1072, 156.5ppk or £1677. Messrs Hunter & Son, Berrier Head sold a British Blue cross stock bull which sold for 1108kg, 139.5ppk or £1545.

PRIME BULLS – A very good entry of 110 prime bulls whereby quality was good but trade would be slightly less to that of last week. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Rae, Boghead Farm, Dumfries who received £1711 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Simmentals sold to £1672 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Top pence per kilo of 217.5p was received by Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie and purchased by Brookwood Abattoir. A plainer offering of black and whites forward with an overall top of £1091 from Messrs Trafford, Springfield, Cockermouth and top pence per kilo of 166.5p from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE – One of the largest entries of prime steers and heifers seen in Borderway for many a year with a marvellous show of 92 and trade was flying throughout the sale. The top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith who attained £1648.22 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses sold to £1588 from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle and a Charolais cross sold to £1380 from Messrs Hird, Wiza Farm, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo steer was a Limousin cross from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle who received 233.5p and purchased by Mr David Whaite. Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle sold another to 231.5p purchased by Brookwood Abattoir.

Heifers again forward in fantastic quality and numbers and saw an overall top of £1631 for a marvellous Limousin cross from Messrs Harrison, Hill House Farm, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont sold another to £1624. Charolais sold to £1485 from Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton purchased by Alan Jarvis and British Blues to £1351 from Messrs Brough, How Gill, Wigton purchased by Brookwood Abattoir. Top overall pence per kilo of 245.5p was attained by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle and purchased by Geoff Nutter. Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg sold another to 244.5p and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher, Corby Hill, Carlisle and 243.5p from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton again purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher. PRIME SHEEP–  Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime and cast sheep on Monday, numbers were back to normal levels after last week’s bank holiday and all classes sold well with spring lambs and handy weight hoggs meeting a great enquiry.

Prime Lambs: 136 spring lambs were met with an increased number of potential outlets, the section topped at £123.80 for a pen of 4 exceptional Texel x lambs from Messrs Atkinson, The Gill, Aspatria to Mr A Dawson. Messrs Hornsby, The Stackyard topped per kilo with a fantastic pen of Texels at 304.5p again to Mr A Dawson.

Prime Hoggs- 1442 hoggs sold well especially 42-47kg types topping at £111 for a fabulous Dutch Texel from Messrs Haston, Dearham Hall, Maryport to Mr R Skelton. Top per kilo was a great pen of 5 Texel x hoggs from Ed Gate, Brackendene, Cockermouth which sold at 265.1p to Mr R Skelton. Hill bred hoggs sold to £99.30 for a pen of 25 Cheviot hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 230.1p again for Cheviots from Messrs Whitefield, Woodhouses.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A much larger show of ewes forward that were met by a much improved trade. Topping the sale was a pen of Dutch Texel ewes from Messrs Mounsey, Ashfield at £123.50 to Mr Bell, Lockerbie. Another good pen of Texel ewes were forward from Messrs Hornsby, Wigton selling for £113.50 again to Mr Bell, Lockerbie. Swaledales were in high demand with top price Swaledale coming from Messrs Donald, Low Row selling to £62.50. Cheviots were also in good demand for a pen selling to £92.50 to Mr R Skelton. Mules topped at £100.50 for Messrs Sanderson. A lot more could have been sold to the vendor’s advantage.
