Borderway Weekly Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 11th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep and once again a very good entry of 596 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 3103 prime and cast sheep were forward.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A large entry of 419 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an increased ring side of buyers which ensued a sharper trade.

Messrs Thompson, How Burn sold an outstanding British Blue cow which sold for 818kg, 197.5p, £1615 to Owain Llyr.  Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm run of great cows topped at /814kg, 1815p, £1477 also to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning sold a pure Limousin cow for 791kg, 177.5p, £1404 also to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 838kg, 165.5p, £1386 to Malcolm Allan.  Messrs Bell, Fitz Farm run of cows topped at 798kg, 171.5p, £1368 for a Charolais cross cow to Owain Llyr.  Messrs Twentyman, Osbourn Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 765kg, 176.5p, £1350 to Owain Llyr.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm selling the top priced Holstein cross cow for 908kg, 117.5p, £1066 to Dovecote Park.  Messrs Mattocks, Aulby sold the top priced Friesian cow for 737kg, 136.5p, £1006 to Les Fell.  Messrs Threlkeld, Baileytown sold a Friesian heifer for 138.5p.  Messrs Wilson, Howfield sold a Holstein cross heifer for 136.5p.  Messrs Jackson, Clarks Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 130.5p.

CAST BULLS – A larger show of 14 stock bulls were on offer.  Messrs Kearton, Wysehill Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 946kg, 147.5p, £1395 to Charles Kirkpatrick and a British Blue stock bull from the same home sold for 1069kg, 123.5p, £1320 to Pickstocks.  Messrs Paisley & Sons, Micklethwaite sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus bull for 1031kg, 124.5p, £1283 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME BULLS – A good, quality show of bulls were forward with a total of 91 meeting a sharper trade on the week.  Topping the sale was a Limousin from Mr Iain Graham, Rose Castle selling to £1618.11 to Charles Kirkpatrick, second top price was again for a Limousin from Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie selling for £1615.13 again to Charles Kirkpatrick.  A fantastic entry of 36 Limousin bulls averaged £1305.82.  Charolais bulls were bid to £1603.79 from Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor this time selling to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.

Topping pence per kilo was again a Limousin, this time from regular consigner Mr Twentyman, Osborne Farm for 220.5p going to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  British Blues topped at 215.5p from E Telfer, Newton High House selling again to Ralph Pearson.

PRIME CATTLE – A fantastic entry of 96 prime cattle were forward and were met by a dearer trade throughout.  Topping the sale was a British Blue steer from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow selling for £1562.87 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Topping the Limousins was a steer from Messrs Bowe, Midtown at £1513.72 again selling to Pioneer Foods.  Heifers topped at £1472.63 from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria again selling to Pioneer Foods.  A Limousin heifer also from Messrs Miller went on to top pence per kilo with a price of 231.5p being achieved and selling to Messrs Medcalf, Halifax.  Limousin steers topped at 229.5p from Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm, Shap selling to R&JP Mulholland Butchers, Carlisle.  A good show of prime cattle were forward with many more good runs of cattle present.  A lot more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw a larger entry of 3103 head forward.

A fantastic show of 2834 prime lambs met a great trade for all classes, with an SQQ of 200.4ppk and an overall average of 185.6ppk or £87.41 per head, these figures included 1573 heavy sheep.

Topping the sale at £110 was an outstanding Texel cross lamb from Messrs WL Musgrave & Sons, Cardew Hall, Dalston, which sold to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton.

Topping pence per kilo honours went to Messrs A & A Little, Hollands, Penton, with a superb single Beltex which later sold to 260ppk again to Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton. Messrs Hall, New Houses, Hallington sold an outstanding run of Beltex lambs to average (41.75kg) 248.86ppk or £103.90 per head.

Heavy lambs sold to £105.80 or 195.9ppk for exceptional 54kg Texel lambs from Tom & Julia Airey, New Grange, Dearham, selling to Mr Robert Skelton.

Suffolks sold to £94.80 twice, firstly by R & E Hodgson, White House, Glassonby and secondly by JS & JA Bird, High Wreay Farm, with both lots selling to Mr Skelton.

Mules met a great demand to average £82.35 to a top of £87 from Messrs A & D Smith, Kelmore Hills, Distington, who also topped pence per kilo at 179.8ppk for another pen from the same home
