At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 2nd July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – Once again a large show of 390 cast cows forward with a good ring side of buyers ensuring all classes were dearer on the week and beef cows selling to average 150.5p overall.

Messrs Kemp, Keepwick Farm’s run of cows topped at 808kgs at 223.5p totalling £1805 for a British Blue cow bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Cleasby, Linden House sold the top priced Charolais cow for 909kgs at 179.5p totalling £1631 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold a Limousin cow for 723kgs at 224.5p totalling £1623 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head Farm sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 657kgs at 233.5p totalling £1534 to Owain Llyr.

Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold a Limousin cow for 858kgs to 187.5p at £1608 bought on behalf of Messrs Worsley. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of pure Limousin cows topped at 937kgs at 164.5p totalling £1541 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Graham, Miller Hill’s run of cows topped at 204.5p for a Blue cross bought by Owain Llyr.

A very good show of Black & White cows were on offer with all classes being in great demand. Messrs Gorst, Low Wood sold the top priced Swedish Red for 951kgs at 137.5p totalling £1307 to Messrs McCreery, Ireland. Messrs Watson, Howrigg Farm sold a Holstein cross bullock for 802kg at 158.5p totalling £1271 to Les Fell. Messrs Jefferson, High Pow sold a Holstein cross cow for 853kgs at 139.5p totalling £1189 bought by Dunbia. Messrs Paisley & Sons, Micklethwaite Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow which sold for 757kg at 154.5p totalling £1169 bought by Dunbia. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm’s run of Holstein cross cows topped at 861kgs at 132.5p totalling £1140 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Gillespie, High Ploughlands sold a Holstein cross heifer for 154.5p. Messrs Slack, Cockley Bank also sold Holstein cross heifers for 154.5p and 153.5p.

A small show of 8 stock bulls on offer with Messrs Vevers, High Plains sold an outstanding Limousin stock bull for 1166kgs at 176.5p totalling £2057 to Owain Llyr.

Prime Bulls: A smaller entry of 79 prime bulls were forward selling slightly sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Bunting, Midtown Farm, Dumfries, receiving £1652.22 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, and to £1633.80 for another from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, which was purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland. Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to £1466.29from Messrs Armour, Milton, Moffat purchased by Jewtitt Meat, Spennymoor.

Top overall pence per kilo of 224.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Taylor & Gill, Fell End, Cockermouth and was purchased by Jewitt Meats. Black and whites peaked at £1226.30 from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton and was purchased by Jewitt Meats. Finally top pence per kilo of 183.5ppk was attained twice, firstly by Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith and secondly by Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle.

Prime Cattle: A smaller entry of 27 prime steers and heifers were forward with all classes a touch sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie who attained £1653.18 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Irving, Thackmire, Wigton sold another to £1607.33. British Blue crosses sold to £1515.29 from Messrs Harrison, Down Hall, Wigton.

Top overall pence per kilo of 234.5ppk was achieved by Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle for a Limousin cross. Messrs Harrison, Down Hall, Wigton sold the top British Blue cross to 226.5ppk.

Heifers sold to a top of £1588.15 for a Limousin cross form Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and top pence per kilo of 230.5ppk was attained for the same animal.

Many more could have been sold.

Prime Lambs – Numbers saw a rise on the week to 1450 which is an increase on last year’s date. Well fleshed lambs of all weights met a great enquiry with plenty breaking into three figures. An overall sale average of 216.2ppk again placing Carlisle at the top of the averages nationwide.

The sale topped at £126.80 for a fantastic Texel lamb shown by Seymour Farms, Leegate, Wigton which sold to Mr Bowe, Keswick. Messrs Robinson, Bog Hall, Capheaton sold an outstanding run of lambs with their best pen of Beltex lambs selling at a top of 294ppk, or £114.80 for 39kg lambs and were sold to Mr Dawson, Sedbergh. Messrs Dobson, West End Farm, Allonby averaged £109.36 for a run of 48kg lambs or 227ppk to top at £118.80. Messrs Browell, Quarry House Hexham averaged £108.83 for a pen of Texel cross lambs averaging 44kg, and sold to 247ppk. Messrs Urwin, Hill House Kirklinton levelled at £108.39 for a pen of 41kg Dutch Texels lambs and sold to 264ppk.

Cast Ewes: Cast ewes were forward in greater numbers and topped at £115.50 for a pen of Texels from Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft, Wigton.
