At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 16th July, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A great show of 590 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with trade for well fleshed cows being as dear as last week but feeding cows would be less on the week.

Messrs Teasdale, Colstons sold a British Blue cow for 825kgs at 231.5p totalling £1909 bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Carr, Little Bavington Farm’s cows topped at 842kgs at 179.5p totalling £1511 for a British Blue cow bought by Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Wigham, Hargill House sold a Limousin cross cow for 209.5p to Owain Llyr. Messrs Nixon and Sons, Stotsfield Farm sold a Limousin cross cow for 659kgs at 199.5p bought for Messrs Worsley. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale run of cows topped at 749kgs at 183.5p totalling £1374 bought by Oain Llyr. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold a Limousin cross cow for 839kgs at 158.5p totalling £1329 bought by Messrs McCreery. Messrs Irving, Bectonhall sold a British Blue cow for 698kgs at 188.5p totalling £1315 to Les Fell.

A plainer show of Black and White cows on offer however the trade upheld that of last week. Messrs Marrs and Son, Broomhills run of Holstein cross cows topped at 785kgs at 137.5p totalling £1079 bought by Dunbia. Messrs Irving, Bectonhall sold a Holstein cross cow for 815kgs at 131.5p totalling £1071 bought by Messrs McCreery. Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced Friesian cow which sold for 819kgs at 129.5p totalling £1060 bought Dunbia. Messrs Graham & Sons, Campfield Farm sold the top priced Montbeliarde cow which sold for 712kgs at 143.5p totalling £1021 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Paisley & Sons, Micklethwaite Farm sold the top priced Friesian Heifer which sold for 147.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Marrs and Son, Broomhills also sold a Holstein cross cow for 142.5p to Messrs McCreery. Messrs Watson & Son, Moorhouse Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 141.5p to Pickstocks. Messrs Carter and Son, Gerrard House sold a Holstein cross Heifer for 140.5p to Les Fell.

A small show of 8 stock bulls were on offer, Messrs Adamson, West Minsteracres sold the top priced British Blue stock bull which sold for 859kgs to 177.5p totalling £1524 bought on behalf of Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A total offering of 106 prime bulls forward with all plainer sorts 10 pence less on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, Workington who attained £1749 and £1607 for another purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland and Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Blondes sold to £1559 from Messrs Gibb, Jubilee Buildings, Newcastle purchased by Messrs McCreery. Charolais sold to £1546 from Messrs Wright, Carwood Farm, Biggar. British Blues sold to £1540 from Messrs Blaylock, Kirkend, Coldstream this same vendor also achieved top pence per kilo of 238.5p and purchased by Ralph Pearson. Black and Whites sold to a days top of £1079 from Messrs Little, Kirkbridge House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and top pence per kilo of 178.5p from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

Prime Cattle: A good entry of 50 prime steers and heifers were forward selling to a good trade.  Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Anderson, Crosby House, Maryport who received £1678.08 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  British Blues sold to £1584 from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 227.5p was attained by Kedzlie Farms, Galashiels.

In the heifer section top overall was £1592.60 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Errington, Beckhouse Farm, Cockermouth purchased by Pioneer Foods.  British Blue crosses topped at £1507.37 from Messrs Maw, Beaumont House, Hexham, this same heifer also attained top pence per kilo of 245.5p and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Limousin crosses peaked at 237.5p from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle and purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Prime Lambs – The weekly sale of prime sheep, had a smaller entry of lambs forward, however trade for well finished sorts remained firm resulting in an overall pence per kilo average of 187p.

The sale topped at £108 for an outstanding Texel cross lamb from Messrs G Clubbs, Old Walls, Irthington, and was purchased Mr Robert Skelton. Top price per kilo was 235.4ppk and was paid for a fantastic Beltex cross lamb from Messrs G & L Hewitt, Cardewlees, Wigton, which was also purchased by Mr Skelton. Closely followed by JW Storey & Son, Woodhead Farm, Haltwhistle with a classy Beltex at 235.1ppk.
