Borderway Weekly Primestock Sale

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle Monday 23rd July Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 372 Cast Cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were forward.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A smaller show of 272 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with trade being less on the week. Messrs Blake, Halfway Well sold the top priced British Blue cow for 838kg at 173.5p totalling £1453 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Dobson, West End Farm sold the top priced Charolais Cow which sold for 873kg at 138.5p totalling £1209 to K McCreery.  A plain show of Black and White cows on offer with trade being less on the week.  Messrs Mattinson & Sons, Rosewain Farm, Wigton sold the top priced Ayrshire cow selling for 888kg at 111.5p totalling £990 to Les Fell.  Messrs Armstrong, Littleton Farm run of cows topped at 823kg at 112.5p totalling £925 to Steven Bowes.  Messrs Gardhouse & Sons, Aikton House sold a Holstein x cow for 877 kg at 104.5p totalling £916 to K McCreery.

A small show of 7 stock bulls on offer.  Messrs Lancaster, Roseleigh sold the top priced Blue stock bull which weighing 1007 kg, 154.5  £1555 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

Prime Bulls: A smaller entry of 87 prime bulls forward selling to a similar trade to that of last week. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Horn, Lower Griseburn, Appleby seeing a top of £1425 and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. Simmentals sold to £1374 from Messrs Prudham, Whitefield, Brampton and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Beef Shorthorns to £1347 for Messrs Hodge, Lesserlin Lanark. Top pence per kilo of 225.5p was achieved by Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annanand purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Black and Whites peaked at £1129 for Messrs Irving, Bectonhall, Canonbie purchased by Messrs Moscrop and Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle purchased by Jewitt Meats.

Prime Cattle: A smaller entry of 29 Prime steers and heifers forward with a good trade achieved for all types.  A day’s top of £1746 was achieved for a Charolais steer and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top Limousin crosses came from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle receiving £1663.88 and the same good home topped British Blues crosses to £1606.43.  Top pence per kilo of £232.50 was achieved by Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Kirkby Stephen.

Heifers saw a day’s top of £1550.25 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Dent, Elm Farm, Appleby and purchased by King Street Butchers.  Top British Blue cross heifer came for the same vendor and peaked at £1500.17.  Top overall price per kilo of 239.5 was received by the same vendors for another Limousin cross.  More could have been sold.

Prime Lambs – The weekly of prime and cast sheep attracted a larger entry of 2250 lambs and 207 ewes and rams. A fantastic show in terms of both quality and quantity was forward.

All classes of prime lambs took a rise on the week to average 191.3ppk which equates to £81.62 per head. The sale topped at £104.80 for heavy Texels consigned by Messrs Reed, Croft House, Great Orton which sold to Mr Lomax. Topping per kilo at 252.1p was another outstanding lamb from Messrs Reed which sold to Mr Skelton.

The first mules of the season peaked at £85 a head brought forward by Messrs Nichol, Lawston purchased by Mr Bowe. Suffolks sold to £94.80 on two occasions firstly for a fantastic pen of 16 from Messrs Wilson, Norman Craggs and also for a pen of heavier lambs from Messrs Irving, New Sandsfield. More lambs required next week.
