At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 15th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock where they had a larger entry of 506 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle, along with 2288 prime and cast sheep.
Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A large show of 370 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday with a good ringside of buyers and trade being similar on the week.
Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold two cows which topped at 794kgs at 184.5p totalling £1464 for a British Blue cross and 794kgs at 183.5p totalling £1456 for a Limousin cross purchased by Kenny McCreery and Charles Kirkpatrick.
Mr Ian Goldie, Greenfield sold the top priced Charolais cow at 718kg at 183.5p totalling £1317 to Kenny McCreery. Messrs Dobson, West End Farm sold a Charolais cross heifer for 656kg at 190.5p totalling £1249 to David Barker. Messrs Goldie, Greenfield sold a Charolais heifer for 657kgs at 187.5p totalling £1231 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Lawson & Son, South Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow selling for 987kgs at 124.5p totalling £1228 to Kenny McCreery. Messrs Bell, Hilltop Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 776kgs at 153.5p totalling £1191 to Charles Kirkpatrick.
A plain show of Black and White cows were on offer with all classes selling well. Holstein cross heifers sold to 727kgs at 151.5p totalling £1101 and 705kgs at 135.5p totalling £955 both purchased by Pickstocks. Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield Farm sold a Danish Red for 988kgs at 99.5p totalling £983 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 875kgs at 104.5p totalling £914 to Eric Hall. Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale sold a Holstein cross cow for 625kgs at 144.5p totalling £903 to Pickstocks.

A larger show of 13 stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Hunter & Sons, Steel Farm selling an outstanding Limousin stock bull for 1123kgs at 191.5p totalling £2150 to Messrs Jardine. Messrs Marrs & Sons, Croft Farm sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1213kgs at 133.5p totalling £1619 to Owain Llyr.

Prime Bulls: Yet another large show of 103 prime bulls with a mixed offering evident seeing a sharper trade achieved on the week. Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie achieving £1936 and was purchased by Messrs McCreery, Ireland. British Blues sold to £1617 from Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns, Wigton purchased again by Messrs McCreery. Charolais sold to £1565 from Messrs Wight, Carwood, Biggar purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top pence per kilo was 225.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory Carlisle and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Dairy bred bulls saw a days top of £1328 for a Daish Red from Messrs Pinguey, Haythwaite, Carlisle purchased by Messrs McCreery and finally top overall pence per kilo pf 177.5p for a Holstein Friesian from CC Livestock, South Carthat, Dumfries purchased by Bowland Foods.

Prime Cattle: A very good entry of 44 prime steers and heifers forward with all classes a good trade and all vendors leaving delighted. Top overall was a superb Charolais cross heifer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont achieving £1681 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. The same vendor also sold top Limousin cross to £1671 also purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top pence per kilo and overall top was a British Blue cross from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.
Steers peaked at £1680 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods and Limousin crosses to £1641 from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth. Top pence per kilo steer was a Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie achieving 232.5p. Many more could have been sold.

Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes – Borderway’s weekly sale of prime sheep saw 2061 prime lambs and 227 cast sheep forward. Trade was very similar on the week with an average of 170.52p being achieved which equated to £74.93 a head.
The sale topped at £97.80 on three occasions for Dutch Texels from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House and Beltex from Messrs Reay, West Moorhouses and Messrs Hall, Hallington New Houses selling to Mr A Dawson, Mr R Skelton and Mr M Lomax respectively. Messrs Hall’s pen of 15 Beltex also topped per kilo at 237.7p.
Ewes were sharper throughout with a top of £105.50 for Suffolks from Mr C Brough, Buckabank.
