At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 25th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. Once again a good show of 445 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward along with 1811 cast and prime sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM Cattle – A good show of 298 cast cows and stock bulls were forward on Monday at Carlisle with all classes being in great demand and again up on the week. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 846kg at 169.5p totalling £1433 to Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Sisterson, Newlands Haugh Farm, Consett’s run of great cows topped at 861kg at 159.5p totalling £1373 for a Charolais cow bought by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold the top priced Limousin cow at 854kg for 160.5p totalling £1370 and 825kg at 165.5p totalling £1365 bought for Mrs Margaret Worsley and Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill sold the top priced Blonde cow for 887kg at 154.5p totalling £1370 to Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall’s run of cows topped at 797kg at 163.5p totalling £1303 bought for Mrs Margaret Worsley. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains’ run of Simmental cows topped at 900kg at 139.5p totalling £1255 to Messrs Kirkpatrick.

A good show of black and white cows were forward with all classes again being sharper on the week. Messrs Graham, Carleton Hill Farm sold a Friesian cow for 813kg at 129.5p totalling £1052 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Crowther, West Trailtrow’s run of cows topped at 846kg at 123.5p totalling £1044 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Johnstone, Westray Farm sold the top price Montbeliarde cross cow for 900kg at 115.5p totalling £1039 to Les Fell. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 799kg at 128.5p totalling £1026 also to Les Fell. Messrs Fisher & Co, Geltside Farm’s run of cows topped at 787kg at 129.5p totalling £1019 for a Montbeliarde cross cow bought by Les Fell,

A small show of 7 stock bulls were forward.  Messrs Warnock & Sons, Dreva Farm sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1373kg at 118.5p totalling £1627 to Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Proctor, Swarland Old Hall sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 984kg at 137.5p totalling £1353 bought by Messrs Kirkpatrick. Messrs Watson, Church Farm also sold a Limousin stock bull for 1087kg at 120.5p totalling £1309 also to Messrs Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – Yet another large show of 112 prime bulls forward selling similar to that of last week, new buyers were in attendance and a day’s top of £1692 was achieved by D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill, Lockerbie for a Limousin. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Wishaw sold another to £1544 both purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blue crosses sold to £1582 from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle. Simmentals sold to £1525 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and Aberdeen Angus sold to £1460 for Messrs Lawson, South Farm, Newcastle. Top pence per kilo of 217.5p was attained by Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton for a Limousin cross. Black and whites sold to £1160 from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat with a top pence per kilo of 168.5p attained by Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE – A good entry of 43 prime steers and heifers forward with a good trade achieved for all classes. Top overall was a British Blue steer from Messrs Nicholson, Gill Farm, Carlisle receiving £1637 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousins sold to £1625 from the same home and they also received top pence per kilo of 224.5p. Heifers were very easily sold and topped at £1546 from Messrs Wilson, Petterill Hill Farm, Carlisle purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Limousin crosses peaked at £1515 from Messrs Smithston, Bloan Farm, Kirkby Stephen purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top overall of 230.5p was achieved twice, firstly by Messrs Philipson, Glebe Farm, Penrith with a  Limousin cross purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of a butcher and secondly by Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill for a British Blue cross purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers.

Prime Hoggs – On Monday Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime hoggs which attracted an increased entry of 1728. New buyers around the ringside ensured all classes sold to a great enquiry, resulting in one of the best trades this season with a sale average of £86.70 and SQQ of 205ppk with over half the sale being hill bred hoggs.

The sale topped at £118.80 on two occasions both from Messrs Bouch, Copperthorns who had a marvellous run of Continental x hoggs forward with first pen also topped the sale per kilo at 304.6p selling to Mr A Dawson and the other pen making 300.8p to Mr G Lomax. Messrs Bouch’s run of 46 export weight hoggs averaged £104.27 per head and 252ppk. The sale average for continental hoggs being £89.86 a head. Suffolk hoggs averaged £88.55 and sold to £93.50 for heavies from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 197.4p for another pen from the same home. Mule hoggs averaged £86.39 to a top of £88.80 from T & AT Bowman, Brampton Fell and to 188.3p from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown. Hill bred hoggs averaged £84.88 and sold to £88.80 for a pen of Cheviots from Messrs Reid, Bengall Farm and to 203.3p for Scotch Blackface hoggs from J & DM Graham, Laws Hall. More hoggs could have been handled with ease.

Cast Ewes and Rams: A smaller show of sheep forward but more quality on offer. Topping the sale was a pen of Texel ewes from Mr Reid, Lockerbie for the price of £113.50. A pen of Mules from Messrs Johnstone, Wigton sold to £78.50 to Messrs England. A pen from Messrs Armstrong, Brampton was also bid to the same price. A pen of Blackfaced ewes from Messrs Gilhespy, Haydon Bridge for £67.50. More numbers could be sold each week to the sellers advantage.
