At Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Monday 28th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime cattle and sheep and once again a large show of 509 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were forward.

CAST COWS & OTM CATTLE – A larger show of 291 cast cows and stock bulls were forward with trade being as good as last week’s better trade.

Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate Farm sold an outstanding Charolais cow for 905kg, 147.5p £1334 bought by Messrs Worsley.  Messrs Slack, Plumtree House sold the top priced Limousin cow for 758kg, 165.5p £1254 bought by Jewitts.  Messrs Watson & Sons, Church Farm sold a Limousin cow for 771 kg 149.5p £1152 to Messrs Worsley.  Messrs Oliver, Cawfields run of Limousin cows topped at 648kg 174.5p £1130 and 590kg, 187.5p £1106 bought by Les Fell and Rob Medcalf.  Messrs Nixon & Sons, Stotsfold Farm, sold a  Limousin x cow for 783kg 143.5p £1123 to Messrs Worsley.  Messrs Graham, Miller Hill sold a British Blue x cow for 744kg, 150.5p, £1119 to Mr Roberts.  Messrs Goldie, Greenfield sold a Charolais cow for 948kg 117.5p £1113 to Sean McGimpsey.  Messrs Wallace & Co, Mains of Collin Farm, sold a Limousin x cow for 631kg 171.5p £1082 to Jewitts.

A mixed show of black and white cows were on offer with Messrs Fisher & Co, Geltside Farm, sold the top priced Montbelairde x Cow for 879kg 107.5p £944 to Steven Bowes.  Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 865kg 103.5p £895.  Messrs Walker & Co, Barwinnock Farm, Holstein x cows topped at 637kg 138.5 £882 to Wesley Gracey.  Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths Holstein x cows topped at 827kg 105.5p £872 to Les Fell.  Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 838kg 103.5 £867 also to Les Fell. Messrs Naylor, Hill Green sold a Holstein x cow for 806kg, 107.5p £866 to Les Fell.  Messrs Threlkeld, Bailey Town sold a Norwegian Red cow for 646kg, 132.5p, £855 to Wesley Gracey.  Messrs Shepherd, Crownstone Farm, sold the top priced Friesian cow for 831kg 102.5 £851 to Les Fell.

Stock Bulls: A smaller show of 10 Stock bulls were on offer.  Messrs Johnson, West Wharmley sold the top price Charolais stock bull for 1328kg 119.5p £1586.  Messrs Airey, Brownchester sold a British Blue stock bull for 1123kg, 129.5 £1454.  Messrs Pearson, The Faulds sold a British Blue stock bull for 1092kg, 129.5p £1414.  Messrs Longlands, Rushey Law Farm sold the top priced Limousin Stock bull which sold for £1047kg 121.5p £1272 all bought by Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME BULLS – A very good show of 54 prime steers and heifers were forward, selling again sharper on the week. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton, achieving £1527 purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 217.5ppk was received by Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie. Heifers sold to a day’s top of £1494.90 from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and was purchased by Pioneer Foods. The same home also sold the top priced Limousin cross to £1407.

Top overall pence per kilo of 2395ppk was received by How Place Farm, and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousin heifers sold to 233.5ppk from the same home and were purchased by Brookwood Abattoir.

PRIME CATTLE – One of the largest entries of 154 prime bulls was forward in Borderway this week, with a very good trade being achieved for all classes.

Top overall was a superb Limousin cross from Messrs W & R Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington receiving £1773.57 and was purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle sold another to £1567.35. the same vendor sold the top priced British Blue cross to £1637.60 was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Charolais sold to £1446.61 from Mr Paul Stobart, Carlisle, and Simmentals to £1421.15 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie.

Top pence per kilo of 226.5ppk was achieved for a British Blue cross from Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, purchased by Mr Ralph Pearson.

Black and whites peaked at £1098 from Messrs Gott, Prospect House, Cockermouth and topping the pence per kilo of 171.5ppk was Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton, being purchased by Bowlands Foods, Preston.

PRIME SHEEP – The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep had a  lesser show forward.  However they were met by a fantastic demand to average 173.22ppk (SQQ 182.78p) eclipsing any pre-sale predictions.

Two vendors shared the top price honours this week both with Dutch Texel x lambs. First was Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle who sold a single at £108.80 and also a pair at £107.80 to Mr A Dawson. Also achieving £108.80 and claiming the top price per kilo of 259p for a pen of 6 was Messrs Urwin, Hill House which sold to Wrights of Boston.

Heavy lambs were far sharper on the week selling to a top of £107.80 for a great pair of Dutch lambs from JW Smith-Jackson, Hightown. Hill lambs sold to a top of £80 for Blackface from Messrs Dixon, The Stobbs. Many more lambs could easily of vendors advantage.
