On Monday 9th September, Borderway Mart held their annual show and sale of North of England Mule Gimmer Shearlings seeing a catalogued entry of 2700 forward.
Noted runs of sheep with regular customers met a sharp trade throughout being £7 – £10 up on the year, more commercial types met a steadier enquiry realising £115 – £125 a head on a regular basis seeing an overall average for a 100% clearance of £124.55, being £1 up on the year despite last years buoyant trade.
The pre-sale show was very capably judged by Mr Darren Clark, Stripes Farm, Waitby, Kirkby Stephen awarding the 1st place rosette to Messrs Ridsdale, Yew Tree Farm, Penrith which went on to sell for £166 with their run of 118 averaging £148.68. Top price of the day was from Messrs Baty, Broom Hills, Hethersgill who topped the sale at £177 for a pen of 25 followed with other pens selling to £162, £160, £158, £154 and £152 twice with an overall average of £155.81 for 235 head.
Following the mules was a select entry of continentals with demand being strong from start to finish with the top pen selling to £165 for Texel cross shearlings from Messrs Irving, East Cliff, Kirklinton.
