The first British Blue sale of the year was held at Carlisle on Friday where trade topped at 7500gns and an average of £4669 was attained for the 16 bulls sold.
Topping the sale was the bull Stonebyres Memphis from A & CS Comrie’s Lanarkshire based herd. This bull was sired by Kersey Geronimo and out of the homebred Stonebyres Izzy by Tamhorn Enterprising. Memphir had won his class in the pre-sale show and went on to be purchased by Messrs Hartley from Much Wenlock, Shropshire.
Two bulls sold for 6000gns, the first of these was JH Pedley’s Oak Tree Limited Edition sired by Colos Van Daisel and out of Oak Tree Itsy Bitsy. Limited Edition had won 3rd prize in his class in the morning’s pre-sale show and he must have caught the eye of the successful bidder Messrs Atkinson from Goole, North Humberside.
Also at 6000gns was a bull from local breeder Kevin Watret. Solway View Mustang was sired by Pendle Bruce and out of the homebred Jezzabell. Mustang was heading up to Aberdeenshire when he was purchased by Messrs Ogg from Strathdon.
The Male and Overall Championship as judged by John Hyslop of the Netherton herd was won by J & A Sloan’s Ballygrange Legend sired by Ballygrange Ince and out of the Empire D’Ochain daughter Ballygrange Gracie. Legend, a November 2016 born bull, was purchased by Messrs Ewart from Lockerbie for 5500gns.
Mel & Diane Lucas’s Lukeroyal Logo sold for the next best price of 5200gns. Logo, sired by Tweedale Hebony, had won 2nd prize in his pre-sale show class and went on to be purchased by Messrs Dobson from Bishop Auckland.
The final bull to hit the 5000gns mark was from R & M Paterson’s Perthshire based Auchenlay herd. Auchenlay Moray was sired by Almeley Hazard and out of the Mountjoy Utopia daughter Auchenlay Caroline. This May 2017 born bull had won 2nd prize in his class and was purchased by Messrs Dandie from Broxburn, West Lothian.
The Female Champion and Reserve Overall Champion Brennand Nightshade from JC Walker & Son sold for the top female price of 5000gns. This January 2018 born heifer sired by Kubitus De Bray and out of Brennand Jenny comes from a long line of show winning females including going back to the great Bringlee Sandy. The successful bidder on this occasion was Messrs Ewbank from Harrogate.
Richard Tiplady’s heifer Tipladys Mai Tai won Reserve Female Champion and went on to sell for 4500gns to Messrs Crowther, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire. Mai Tai was sired by Tweeddale Ironman and out of Tipladys Jorja.
Also at 4500gns was the Springhills Blues Northern Ireland based herd’s Springhill Naughty Girl. Sired by Empire D’Ochain and out of the unbeaten show cow Springhill Golden Girl this April 2018 born heifer was purchased by Henry Jewitt from Barnard Castle.
