Broughton Mountain Ewe Sale

On Tuesday 6th October Harrison & Hetherington held their Annual sale of Mountain ewes within Broughton Auction Mart, which attracted an entry of 2350 ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs.

Trade from start to finish proved buoyant, with buyers travelling as far as Devon to Inverness, and overseas from Northern Ireland to this noted sale.

Topping the trade at £380 was a consignment of shearling gimmers from annual consignors Mr Anthony Hartley, Turner Hall, he sold a further two pens to £350 and £300 respectively. Mr Hartley’s draft ewes were also in great demand, with is first 100 ewes selling to an astonishing average of £175.55.

Another great run of 5 shearling gimmers were presented by Messrs G Wilkinson, Brookfield Farm, Torver who sold a very flashy pen for £320.

A large commercial demand pushed the trade on to result in an overall average of £81.75 (+£27.67) on the year, with Herdwicks averaging £84.02 (+30.19) on the year.

Swaledale ewes were also very well bid for, with a top price of £188 being paid for a pen of 10 from Messrs Wilson, Coniston Hall, Coniston.
