Broughton Show and Sale of Herdwick and Swaledale Rams

2nd October 2018

On Tuesday 3rd October, Harrison and Hetherington held their Annual show and sale of 256 Swaledale and Herdwick rams, within Broughton Auction Mart.

This event was kindly sponsored by Tony Sharp, Furness Supplies, Peter Horn, Harrison and Hetherington and Farmers Guardian.

The Herdwick classes were very capably judged by Mr Paul Naylor, Bowderdale, Seascale and Mr Peter Edmondson, Seathwaite, Borrowdale, who awarded the Championship to Messrs RRJ Weir, Chapel Farm, Borrowdale for their 2shear which sold to 700gns. The aged ram class was won by Messrs J Bland, Yewtree Farm, Borrowdale which sold for 500gns for a 3shear. The shearling class was won by Messrs M & GM Fox, Crosbythwaite, Broughton in Furness who also won Reserve Champion and best mouthed Herdwick.

Trade was selective from the beginning, however as the sale progressed, prices and demand improved, topping at 4000gns for a 3shear from Messrs A Hartley Ltd, Turner Hall, Broughton In Furness, followed by another selling to 3200gns. This good run of 8 averaged £1755.

Mr David Thompson, Climb Stile, Woodland, also seen his pen of Herdwick rams in high demand, with a very strong pen of seven topping at 2200gn and 1800gns.

In the Swaledale section, a good quality run of rams were forward for Mr Jono Hoggarth, to judge. He placed Messrs Lightfoot, Gillside Farm, Glenridding both first in the shearling class and as the Overall Champion, which sold for £450. Messrs Lightfoot also took first place in the aged ram class which later sold for £600.

Outwith the show, Swaledale rams topped at £1000 for a shearling from Messrs A Hartley Ltd, Turner Hall, Broughton In Furness.

The next sale at Broughton Mart will be the Show and Sale of Mountain ewes on Tuesday 9th October.
