Broughton Show and Sale of Herdwick and Swaledale Rams

On Tuesday 1st October, Harrison and Hetherington held their Annual show and sale of Swaledale and Herdwick rams, within Broughton Auction Mart.

This event was kindly sponsored by Tony Sharp, Furness & South Cumberland Supplies, Peter Horn Mobile dipper, Harrison and Hetherington and Farmers Guardian.

Judging the Herwick classes was noted breeders Mr David Harrison, Brotherikeld and Mr Adam Wear, Howe Green who awarded the Champion rosette to the first prize shearling consigned by Joe Weir, Chapel House Farm, Borrowdale, he later went on to sell at 2000gns to the judge Mr Harrison. The Reserve Champion came from Mr David Thompson, Climb Stile with his 1st prize 2shear. This ram sold to the day’s top of 3800gns, again to Mr Harrison.

Trade for Herdwick rams was a flyer, with an overall average of £474.68 being achieved and a 95% clearance. Twelve rams sold to 1000gns and over.

The Swaledale classes were judged by Mr Andrew Nicholson, Birch Bank, who awarded Champion to the 1st prize aged ram consigned by Mr Antony Hartley, Turner Hall, which sold to £500 to Neil Hardisty. The Reserve Champion came from Messrs Hoggarth, Old Hall who topped the trade at £850, when selling to Messrs Walton, Low Kinmont.

Swaledale rams were in great demand, resulting in a total clearance and an average of £261.62 for an offering of mainly aged rams.
