Trade for females could definitely be described as buoyant with nearly all finding new homes. Many buyers attended the live auction but with the availability of online bidding, live streaming and being able to see the sheep with photos in our catalogue as well as social media posts, many were able to bid and acquire sheep without leaving home. With no showing allowed on the day it was up to the purchasers to pick their own winners.
Top price for the day was 1000gns for a shearling ewe from Judith & Graham Galbraith of Kendal. This Graylen Laird sired shearling combined looks with great performance, being in the top 1% maternal index and last year’s successful show lamb. In lamb to Graylen Nimrod, she sold to Roy McFarlane and Family to join their Lecropt Flock in Stirling.
The Graylen Flock claimed more success topping the senior in lamb ewe section as well this time with a Graylen Javelin (Sire Yarcombe Iceman) sired ewe with a proven track record for good breeding with her last lamb sold for pedigree use and her first ewe lamb selling at 500gns at the Premier sale. She sells in lamb to Wilstrop Legend who was Great Yorkshire Champion in 2019. Recognising the breeding potential was Matthew Jones and Rebecca Smith for the Birches Flock in Shropshire. The Galbraiths also sold other in lamb ewes to 900gns for both a shearling and a senior ewe.
Ewe lambs were not to be outdone achieving a top price of 950gns and averaging £735. Jim & Jane Birkwood, Thorbeck Flock, all the way from Lincolnshire gained this price with a very sweet looking lamb. Out of a Kelsey ewe, this ewe lamb’s sire is Thorbeck Lincoln who is in the top 1% with an index of 347. This flashy girl sold to Louise Forrest & Andrew Goldie and heads to Dumfriesshire along with another smart ewe lamb at 750gns also from the Thorbeck Flock.
Maiden ewes from John Craig’s spring lambing Lumb Flock high on the Yorkshire moors peaked at 380gns. Sired by Morley Gent this ewe heads to TA & J Brownrigg of Penrith.
Good photos paid dividends for the ram vendors with some great videos and photos for pre-sale marketing. 380gns was attained by Tom Marshall, Pitgair Flock from Aberdeenshire for a ram lamb. The lamb sired by a home bred sire with Ballycreelly 007 in its breeding sold to CJ Parkinson from Doncaster.
The HDSBA would like to say a big thank you to Tamar Milling for their sponsorship of the sale.
