Carlisle Hampshire Down Show & Sale

29th September 2018

Strong demand for females at the North West Region Hampshire Down Autumn sale in Carlisle saw an almost 100% clearance for in-lamb females.   Topping the sale at 1000gns was a shearling ewe from the judge for the day, Kevin McCarthy, N.Ireland.  By Ballycreelly Devil’s Revenge and scanned in lamb with twins to the new Ballycreelly stock ram ‘007’, this stylish ewe went to new breeders T.Marshall who also added in-lamb shearling ewes from Galbraith, Graylen Flock, and Jones, Maes Glas to their consignment heading north to the newly established Pitgair Flock, Turriff, Aberdeen.

Returning for a second year to Carlisle where last year they purchased Ballycreelly stock whose progeny then went on to top the National Sale at Shrewsbury this year for them, Matthew Jones and Rebecca Smith, Birchfield Flock, Telford came looking for more of the same. They returned home with two more Ballycreelly females in lamb to Yarcombe Flashman who sired their successful National Sale ram lamb, going to 800gns for a shearling ewe and paying the top price for older ewe of 650gns.

Taking three of the top four prices for in-lamb females, Ballycreelly were only separated by J & G Galbraith, Graylen Flock, Kendal who secured 850gns for the Show Champion of the day.  This lovely shearling ewe by Yarcombe Iceman out of a home-bred ewe is in-lamb to Morley Kudos who was bought at the National Sale last year.  She sold for 850gns and now travels to Holland to Peter Beers who also bought a second Graylen ewe for 550gns.  Jim & Jane Birkwood, Thorbeck Flock, Lincolnshire kept company at the top with a shearling ewe selling to Adam Strickland, Lancaster for 800gns in lamb to Thorbeck Julius who was National Show champion as a ram lamb 2017.

Ewe lambs peaked at 900gns for the Reserve Champion in the show from J Mercer, Moybrick Flock N.Ireland and selling to new breeder Carole Meaden, Shropshire.

Male Champion was a shearling ram from the Maes Glas flock, Pembrokeshire who sold for 400gns to Sinclair & Son, Castle Douglas who also bought the only other male entry, a ram lamb from Forrest, White and Vevers, Lockerbie.
