Dark Diamonds Suffolk Sale

The Dark Diamonds Suffolk sale this year has consignments from twelve noted breeders, namely – Balquhain flock (Graeme J Christie), Benrafton flock (AJ & NAJ Robinson), Birness flock (George L Stuart), Castleisle Flock (Andrew Wilson), Cairness Flock (JG Douglas), Cairnton flock (John A Gibb), Carony flock (L & M Liggett), Forkins flock (Alistair R Gault), Kings flock (TA Irwin & Son), Lakeview flock (Stuart Craft), Redbrae flock (James T Cannon) and the Roundacre flock (Ross Lawrence).  The sale attracted interest from all over the country and into Europe with buyers from as far away as the Republic of Ireland and Belgium.

Topping the sale at 7000gns was Andrew Wilson’s Castleisle flock with the shearling gimmer DDX:17:00972. Sired by the ‘2016 Sire of the Year’ Birness Murray and out of a Shannagh Resolve sired ewe this gimmer was purchased by Messrs Cobbald from Acton, Sudbury.  This would also contribute to the Castleisle flock acheieving the highest average of £2562 for their 5 gimmers sold.

George Stuart’s Birness flock sold the next best price at 5500gns. This was the gimmer 1W:17:02082 sired by Redbrae Rambo and scanned in lamb to Limestone Legacy. She was purchased by Messrs Paterson from Aberdeenshire.

Selling for 3800gns was TA Irwin & Son’s gimmer CAL:17:02731 sired by Burnview Ballistic. This gimmer had been a member of the King’s flock show team this year and was unbeaten in the show ring. She was sold with a recipient ewe carrying an embryo sired by Birness Bang Tidy. This successful bidder on this occasion was Messrs Elsworthy from Devon.

The Kings flock achieved an average of £2533 for their 4 gimmers sold and this would be helped by them selling another Burnview Ballistic sired gimmer, CAL:17:02733, for 3600gns. She was scanned in lamb to Lavenham Aven’um and purchased by Messrs Lawrence from Devon.

Lesley Liggett’s Carony flock sold the top price ewe lamb in DBB:18:00802. This lamb sired by Rhaeadr Readymix had won 3rd prize at Balmoral Show this year and sold here for 3000gns to Messrs Knox of Ireland.

The Carony flock also sold a gimmer by the same sire for 2000gns. DBB:17:00730, who was scanned in lamb to Rookery Jager Bomb was purchased by Messrs Richmond from Preston.

Stewart Craft sold a gimmer from his Lakeview flock for 2800gns. This was Lomondview ULS:17:17010 sired by Burnview Whirlwind and in lamb to 22,000gns Strathbogie Stradivatius. This successful bidder on this occasion was Messrs Priestley from Northern Ireland.

AR Gault’s Forkins flock achieved a top of 2400gns for the ewe lamb AOR:18:02123. Sired by Forkins Black Gold and out of a Cairness New Approach sired ewe this lamb was purchased via the online bidding system by Messrs Alexander from Northern Ireland.

Best of the Forkin’s gimmers was AOR:17:01939 sired by Forkins Fandago and scanned in lamb to Mullaghboy Goliath she was purchased by Messrs Priestley from Northern Ireland for 2200gns.

Graeme Christie’s Balquhain flock averaged £1073 for 9 gimmers sold with the best of these being PDN:17:00764 who sold for 2000gns. This gimmer was sired by 5000gns Limestone Rolo and and scanned in lamb to Lakeview Under the Radar.

The Benrafton flock of AJ & NAJ Robinson also topped at 2000gns with an average of £1357 for their 7 gimmers sold. Best of their pen was 73A:17:01071 sired by Cairness Temptation and out of a Benrafton bred ewe by Cairness Diamond. This was the flock’s 2018 show gimmer and she sold in lamb to Lakeview Pink Panther to Messrs Williams from Gwynedd.

JG Douglas’ Cairness flock topped at 1500gns twice for two gimmers. This first of these was 33H:17:02715 by Cloontagh Chieftain and out of a Drumpark bred ewe sired by Redbrae Real Deal. This gimmer was purchased by Messrs Moir from Aberdeenshire.  She was followed by a Cavanagrove Catalyst sired gimmer 33H:17:02684 who was purchased by Messrs Borthwick from Ayrshire.

John Gibb’s Aberdeenshire based Cairnton flock sold their first gimmer into the ring for 1000gns. KLR:17:00565 sired by the 2016 National Champion Cairness Sir William and scanned in lamb to Rhaeadr High Roller was heading back to Aberdeenshire when she was purchased by Messrs Henderson.

Ross Lawrence was the only consignor to have aged ewes forward for sale and his Roundacre NHL:16:00177 was the best of these when selling for 600gns. This 2016 born ewe was sired by 10,000gns Deveronside Doodlebug and scanned in lamb to Lavenham Aven’um.  She was purchased by Messrs Duffy from Co Meath, Ireland.

The first gimmer from James Cannon’s consignment topped the Redbrae flock’s offering at 550gns. JKA:17:03190 by Strathbogie Samurai was shown as a ewe lamb by James and she sold in lamb to the Birness Murray son Castleisle Cruiser.
