Dispersal Sale of the Hawksmoor Holstein Herd

25th October 2018

The First Part to disperse the noted Hawksmoor herd, the property of Robert and Hilda Clare of Hawksmoor Farm, Adderley, Market Drayton took place at Beeston Castle Auction, Cheshire on Thursday, 25th October following the Month End Dairy Sale.

This catalogue was undoubtedly one of the best to be produced for a pedigree herd dispersal for a year or two at least and the all-round features of high yield and classification, good sires and cow families and tremendous production certainly brought the crowds in – the car park was jam packed and the ring was heaving. Potential buyers had travelled from West Wales, across the Midlands, Ireland and beyond with over 50 different buyers recorded and some 50 bids of 2000 gns of more.

Naturally enough it was the best animals from the best cow families that attracted the top bids and the top seller was one of the final lots of the day, when mother and daughter from the Shannon family combined to make 5450 gns. Hawksmoor Shannon 21st attracted the top bid, a sensational (VG86-2yr) daughter of McCutchen who had calved in July and is the 7th generation of cows scored in the top two grades. Still giving 32.6 kg and recently served to Mincio, this angular and stylish heifer was purchased for 4100 gns by Jason Booth of Northern Ireland. Following her through the ring was her 3mo daughter by Lineman, already displaying all the great attributes of her mother, selling for 1350 gns to Messrs Cope Prees of Whitchurch.

The second top seller was the outstanding Hawksmoor Topee 92nd (VG89-3yr), a second calver by Alexander who created much interest from the on looking crowd. Reserve Grand Champion at Nantwich and Champion Holstein & Reserve Interbreed at Anglesey Show this year, she really caught your eye within the stalls, selling for 4000 gns again to Messrs Booth of Northern Ireland. Not far behind at 3400 gns was Hawksmoor Seamist 36th (VG87-3yr), again a second calver, who had an udder like no other. Sired by Hawksmoor Barnaby a Mel son; she had calved in July and was still giving 37 kg daily, she was purchased by Ken Marshall of Carmarthen. 3200 gns was then paid by A G Bonsall of Slindon, Staffordshire, Hawksmoor Rene 47th (EX92) was the 6th successive Excellent cow from the Rene family. Sired by the Sanchez son Hawksmoor Donzal this fresh fourth calver was yielding 47.6 kg, and had two sisters which later sold for 3000 gns and 2700 gns. Hawksmoor Rene 50th (VG88-3yr) was a Regancrest Mac Bedford daughter, who was sold dry carrying her third calf to Mogul, she couldn’t have looked in finer form and was sold for 3000 gns to Seaton Farms of Audlem. 3000 gns was also paid for the 6th generation VG/EX, H. Dora 66th (VG86-3yr), sold fresh with her second and was sired by Nethanvale Mel to T H Flower & Sons, Buxton.

Calves were a great trade from start to finish and apart from the top seller at 1350 gns, the next best calf price was 1300 gns for Hawksmoor Topee 101st, a June born daughter of Numero Uno out of the recently mentioned Topee 92nd. She was purchased by A Mawhinney, Northern Ireland. 1100 gns was paid for just the second calf through the ring, a Calumet daughter backed by 8 generations VG/EX from the May Alta family sold to PM & SD Bradbury of Whixall, Shropshire. Again at 1100 gns was another Calumet daughter, whose dam had just sold for 2700 gns, Hawksmoor Rene 57th was purchased by Messrs Cope Prees.
