Dispersal Sale of the Prospect Dairy Herd

25th October 2019

ProCross Cow Tops Prospect Trade

The Prospect herd of Holstein Friesian and ProCross dairy cattle owned by the Mounsey family from Aspatria near Wigton was dispersed at Borderway, Carlisle in front of a huge crowd of buyers from across the UK and Ireland.  Trade topped at £2100 for a super uddered cross bred cow with a large percentage of the freshly calved animals selling for or more than £1500 on a brisk trade.  Buyers from eleven counties were recorded on the buyers list and friends and neighbours of the Mounsey family were very supportive.

Topping at £2100 was lot 154 a freshly calved cow in her second lactation sired by a top Swedish Red sire and was purchased by Mr Knowles from Preston.

Several recently calved heifers attracted a flurry of bidding including lot 194 again sired by the Swedish Red Sire having calved at the start of October.  She was purchased by Mr Beresford from near Kirby in Furness for £2050.

Neighbouring dairy farmer Mr Brough from Langfauld Farm near Wigton purchased two very milky cows for £2000 first for a Holstein Friesian cow in her second recently calved in September and then for a Swedish Red heifer that calved on the 11th October.  Mr Brough also purchased another second calver for £1900 giving an ocean of milk.

Volume buyer Mr Layton from Pargate Farm purchased 31 cows and heifers including lot 184, she was a freshly calved Swedish Red heifer with a very appealing mammary selling for £1850.

There was an excellent group of powerful framed in-calf heifers due from December until June that toped at £1450 to average £1014.  Topping this fine group was a Swedish Red heifer due in December to the British Friesian who was purchased by the Elliott family from Askrigg Hall Farm.

Bulling heifers averaged £680 and topped at £980 for a Swedish Red heifer purchased by volume buyer Mr Dakin from Clitheroe.

There was an outstanding group of heifer calves born in 2019 with a large number only a few weeks old.  They topped at £620 for a January born Swedish red heifer purchased by Mr Bowie from Midtown Farm.  A very flashy looking Montbeliarde calf born in August sold for £520 to the Dixon family from Beech House Farm, Aspatria.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on Wednesday 6th November and features 200 dairy cattle in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  On Friday 8th November Borderway will stage the first sale to disperse the famous Tallent Pedigree Holstein herd on behalf of Anthony Brough from North Lodge Farm.  The catalogue for these sales can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk
