Dispersal Sale of the Smailholm Holstein Herd

27th November 2019

The Stewart family who farm at Sandyknowe near Kelso dispersed most of the milking portion of their Holstein Friesian herd at Borderway on the last Wednesday of November in front of a large crowd of buyers from across the UK.  Trade topped at 2,000gns twice to average almost £1400 with thirty-three buyers from thirteen counties recorded on the buyers list.

All the animals in the herd were sired by bulls from the Queenscairn Holstein herd and they had all calved from the end of September.  They all had quality mammary systems and walked on excellent legs and feet.  Topping the sale was a cow from the Nancy family sired by Queencairn Fervent.  She was freshly calved in her second lactation giving almost 40kgs and was purchased by the Millers from Tarn Lodge, Brampton.

Mr Hessin from Keith in Aberdeenshire purchased a super uddered cow from the Nancy cow family for 2,000gns.  She was sired by Queencairn Kenloyal and was producing over 30kgs.

Topping a highly productive group of third lactation cows was a stylish cow from the Columbine cow family giving almost 60kgs.  She was sired by Queenscairn Chortle and was bred from a dam who milkied for ten lactations.  She sold for 1,900gns to Mr Kellett from Hexham.

The milking heifers were a credit to the Stewart family, they displayed tons of potential and exhibited youthful shallow udders.  Topping this group was a heifer tracing back to the Vaakje cow family from Stardale in Lancashire.  She was sired by Queenscairn Freddies and sold for 1,800gns to Mr Marrs from Carlisle.

Volume buyer, Langley Park Farms purchased an excellent group of cows and heifers all with close to perfect udders including a delightful heifer from the Princess cow family.  She was sired by Queenscairn Freddies and sold for 1,800gns.

There will be a large consignment of freshly calved cows and heifers selling next week from the Smailholm herd included in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  For full details on next weeks sale please view the online catalogue at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk
