Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen held their annual Bluefaced Leicester crossing sale on Saturday when a catalogued entry of 350 were on offer.
Topping the sale at £16,000 was a ram lamb sired by Hewgill F52 out of a Barf House J1 sired dam from local breeders, Messrs Lord, West Dowgill, North Stainmore which sold to Messrs Shennan, Farden Farm, Girvan, Ayrshire.
The pre sale show which was kindly sponsored by Eden Farm Supplies, Natural Stockcare, Copley Coal and I’Ansons saw the best shows of Rams put in front of our Judge, Mr William Huddleston, Snab Green, Arkholme.
Mr Huddleston awarded the overall Championship to a ram lamb sired by Smearsett L12 out of a Highberries G1 dam from Messrs Marston, Millstone Moor, Cockermouth which later went on to sell for £3000 to Messrs Hargreaves, Meadow Bank.
The Reserve overall Champion was the first placed aged ram Carry House 281/J13 from Messrs Dent, Greenriggs, Kirkby Stephen which sold for £500 to Messrs Barrass, Beckside, Walden.
Messrs Marston, Millstone Moor sold his annual consignment of ram lambs to top at £5800 for a Highberries J64 sired lamb out of a Hundith Z4 dam which was successfully purchased by Messrs Ridley of Shitlington Hall Farm, Wark and Messrs McQuistin of Barnshangan, Newton Stewart.
The consignment of 30 ram lambs from Millstone Moore went on to average £1309.09.
Next selling at £5000 was a Highberries H2 sired ram lamb out of Midlock E1 dam consigned by Messrs Reed & son, Lands Farm which sold to Messrs Lawson of Hundith & Messrs Allan, Greenhow.
Next topping at £4500 was Messrs Brown of Asby Hall, Smearsett K1 sired ram lamb out of a Smearset G1 dam which sold to Messrs Wight, Midlock Farm, Biggar.
Following on at £4300 was a Highberries J64 sired lamb out of a Oakhouse F1 dam consigned by Messrs Wilson, Carrholme, Armathwaite which sold to Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange, Great Asby.
Shearling rams topped at £3500 for a Otterburn Lodge K12 sired ram out of a Smearset B13 dam consigned by Messrs Caton, Otterburn Lodge, Skipton and was successfully purchased by Messrs Harrison, Bennett Head Farm, Watermillock.
181 Ram lambs averaged £868.54.
40 Shearling Rams averaged £701.58.
4 Aged Rams averaged £706.66.
For what was the largest show of Leicester’s seen here at Kirkby Stephen there were many top quality consignments from well noted flocks, a lot of which were consigning for the first time. This attracted a full ring side of buyers who were prepared to pay premiums for good quality, well bred rams with over a quarter of the sale selling between £1000 and £16000 and buyers been more selective over the less quality rams.
