Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Store Cattle

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual “May Day” Prize Show and Sale of Store cattle when a catalogued entry of 1210 cattle were on offer.

Topping the sale at £1620 was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which was bought by Messrs Cooper, Troughton Hall, Broughton in Furness.

The pre sale show witnessed an outstanding quality of cattle which would be unrivalled anywhere.

Mr M Swann, Little Ouseburn, York had his work cut out in carrying out the judging duties and awarded the Overall Championship and the Eden Farm Supplies Cup to a smart 11 month old British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Brass, Bridge End Farm, Soulby and went on to sell for £1400 to Messrs Bunting, Dumfries.

The Reserve Champion was given to a 12 month old Limousin cross steer from Messrs Smith Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle which sold for £1300 to Messrs Sedgewick, Newton Aycliffe.

A fantastic trade was witnessed throughout the day with an overall steer average of £1012.27 and a heifer average of £953.87 being achieved.

Just over 80 different active buyers were in attendance from far and wide throughout the country, and was one of the busiest ringside seen here at Kirkby Stephen for some time. Over 70 cattle sold between £1200- £1600 with a quarter of the cattle forward selling between £1100-£1600,

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys farm sold their consignment of 30 steers and heifers to average £1287.83.

A pair of Limousin cross steers from Terrys Farm also topped the steers at £1400.

The second overall highest price on the day of £1600 was achieved for a 9 month old Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby.
