Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when 441calves were on offer.

Topping the sale at £3400 was the Overall Champion a 6 month old Limousin cross heifer from Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm who received the Stan Davis Silver Cup and the North West Limousin Breeders Salver, the heifer was bought over the phone to an undisclosed buyer from Ireland.

The reserve overall championship was taken by a 7 month old Limousin heifer also from Gary Bell, which went on to sell for £2200 to Messrs Hopwood, Manchester.

Next topping at £2100 was a 5 month old British Blue cross heifers from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Kirkby Stephen which sold to Messrs Daly, Southern Ireland.

The British Blue Championship and receiving the British Blue Cattle Society Mugs was a 7 month old heifer from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby which went on to sell for £1700 to Messrs Cropper, Long Preston.

The presale show saw a fantastic turnout of top quality calves put in front of our judge Andrew Morton, Stirlingshire, who carried out the job in a capable manner. The show was kindly sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition, North West Limousin Cattle Breeder Association, The British Blue Cattle Society, Carrs Billington Agriculture and Rural Energy Saving Grants. A flying trade for all types and sizes of suckled calves was witnessed from start to finish here at Kirkby Stephen.

Heifers averaged £864.44(-£14.11 on the year)

Steers averaged £840.57 (-£32.21 on the year)

A packed ringside of buyers were in attendance throughout the sale with over 50 active buyers purchasing calves from Southern Ireland to Stirlingshire in the north to Bedfordshire in the South.
