Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when a catalogued entry of 578 calves were on offer.

Topping the sale at £4000 was the overall champion, a 7 month old red Limousin cross heifers consigned by Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm, Lockerbie which sold to Blair Duffton, Huntly.

Suckler Calf Champion

The overall reserve champion was a 7 month old black Limousin cross heifer which made £2650 from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby which sold to Blair Duffton.

Next selling for £2,600 was a 12 month old Cross Bred heifer from Messrs Millar, Crookholm Farm, Canonbie which sold to Blair Duffton.

British Blue cross heifers sold to £2250 for a 9 month old heifers from Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Wharton selling to D. Thwaite.

Another 9 month old British Blue heifers from this same home sold for £2,100 selling to Messrs Hopwood, Rochdale.

It was Messrs Brown, Asby Hall that next sold at the tender age of 6 months a British Blue cross heifers to make £2100 selling to B. Duffton. With a 7 month old Limousin cross steer to make £1285 with a 6 month old Limousin cross steer making £1115.

Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm, Lockerbie sold his consignment of 30 6-8 month old calves to average a whopping £1270.34. With 7 month old Limousin cross steers to make £1800 with a 6 month old Limousin cross heifer from this home making £1515.

Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange sold 7 month old British Blue cross heifers to make £1600, and 7 month old British Blue steers to make £1185.

Greystoke Castle Farms sold a 6 month old Limousin cross heifers to make £1845 selling to Messrs McAlister, Bonnybridge, with a 6 month old Charolais cross steer from this home making £1145, another pen of four 6 month old Charolais cross steers making £1045, and a five month old Charolais cross steer selling for £1035 also from this home.

Trade from start to finish was described as the dearest ever seen by several people.

Heifers sold to average £1017.72, up £153.28 on the year for 10 more sold.

Steers sold to average £968.18, up £137.61 on the year for 43 more sold.
