Kirkby Stephen Annual Prize Show & Sale of Suckled Calves

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when 560 head were on offer.

Topping the sale at £2700 was the first prize 10 month old hunters Hall sired Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall, Great Asby which was bought by Miss S Cropper, Long Preston.

The overall championship and receiving the Stan Davis Silver Cup and the North West Limousin Breeders Trophy was awarded to a 8 month old Ampertain Jackpot sired Limousin cross heifer consigned by Mr G. Bell, Lockerbie which sold for £2050 to our judge Emma Dickens, Milton Keynes.

The overall Reserve Championship and receiving the British Blue Cattle Society Whiskey Glasses was the champion steer which was a 7 month old British Blue cross sired by Lukeroyal Gladiator from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall which sold for £1320 to Mr K. Ludgate, Leighton Buzzard.

The outstanding consignment of 50 calves from Messrs Brown, Asby Hall sold to average a fantastic £1077.70 with 14 calves from this home selling between £1200 – £2700.

The sale averages were £880.55 for heifers (up £36.27 on the year), £874.78 for steers (up £20.08 on the year).

One of the busiest ringsides of buyers seen here at Kirkby Stephen for suckled calves for some time with over 60 active buyers being in attendance from Aberdeenshire to Bedfordshire, this resulted in a flying trade being witnessed for a fantastic show of calves.
