Kirkby Stephen Luke Fair Ewes, Lambs and Rams

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual Luke Fair sale of all classes breeding sheep when a catalogue entry of 3,600 sheep were forward.

Topping the female section at £360 were a pen of 12, 3-4 crop Swaledale ewes from Paul Hallam, High Birkwith, Houghton in Riversdale which were bought by Mr J Ireland, Frizington.  Messrs Hallam also sold another pen of 5, 2-3 crop Swaledale ewes to make £320 selling to Burncroft Farm, Eggleston and another pen from High Birkwith of 10, 3-4 crop ewes selling for £250 and selling to Messrs Dent, Naby View Farm, Lartington.  The consignment of 30, 2-4 crop Swaledale ewes from this home sold to average a massive £311.85.

Messrs Coates, Aygill Farm, Muker sold 3, 3 crop Swaledale ewes to make £300 selling to P Brown, Oak House, Ravenstonedale.

Shearlings sold to £255 for a pen of 3 Dutch Texels from Messrs Sowerby, Amos Hill Farm, Slaggyford which sold to Messrs Jackson, Littlebeck, Kings Meaburn.  Messrs Sowerby also sold further pens of Dutch Texels to make £250, £240 and £220 and Texel cross shearlings to make £250.

Mule Shearlings sold to £195 for a pen of 12 from Messrs Nutter, Manor Farm, Clitheroe which were bought by Messrs Bousfield, Kirkby Stephen.

Ewe lambs sold to £140 for a pen of 5 Beltex cross from Messrs Wearmouth, Parkside, Barnard Castle which were bought by Messrs Cleasby, Porthy Green, Appleby in Westmorland.

1,038 Swaledale ewes sold to average £93.60 which this average including many pens of broken mouthed and 4-5 crop ewes.

Breeding rams sold to £650 for a Pure Texel shearling from Messrs H&B Wharton, Galloper Rise which was bought by Messrs Gibson, Burnside Hall, Kendal.
