Kirkby Stephen Luke Fair Sale of Breeding Sheep

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual Luke Fair sale of all classes breeding sheep when a catalogue entry of 4100 sheep were on offer.

Topping the female section at £320 per head were a pen of three correct below Swaledale ewes from Messrs Hutchinson, Valley Farm, Barnard Castle and which were bought by Messrs Nutter, Manor Farm, Clitheroe.

Messrs Rukin, Gatehouse Farm, Richmond sold a pair of Swaledale ewes to make £235 selling to N Bell, Spring Hill, Masham.

Valley Farm also sold another three Swaledale ewes to make £220 each purchased by J Capstick, Lockholme Hall, Ravenstonedale.

Mule shearlings sold to £150 for a pen of 10 from Messrs Nutter, Manor Farm, Clitheroe bought by Messrs Errington, Barnard Castle.

Beltex shearlings sold to £172 for a pen from Messrs Coulthard, Gill House, Barnard Castle which were bought by Messrs Ivinson, Sandwick Farm, Ousby.

Trade for all classes of breeding sheep was flying being one of the best seen all season, buyers were present from farm and wide including as far afield as Cardiff.

1018 Swaledale ewes including many broken mouthed and 4 crop plus sold to average £72.71 (up £14.39 on the year)

Texel shearlings averaged £140.32 (plus £62.49 on the year)

Mule gimmer lambs averaged £70.58 (plus £13.13 on the year).
