Kirkby Stephen New Fair Prize Show & Sale of Breeding Sheep

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart, held their annual New Fair Prize Show and Sale of Breeding outfits when 2000 head were catalogued.

Topping the sale at £107 per life and £214 per outfit was a Black Texel cross hogg with lamb from Miss A. slack, Heather Bank, Brackenber selling to Messrs Holmes, Langton Gate.

The pre sale show was ably judged by regular consignor here at Kirkby Stephen Mr Paul Fairburn, Marriforth Farm who had a fantastic turnout of continental, mule hogg and Swaledale ewes with lambs at foot put in front of him.

The first placed Mule hoggs was awarded to Messrs Winter, Clickham, Appleby for their pen of 10 hoggs with Suffolk lambs at foot which sold for £200 per outfit (£100 per life) to Messrs Kendal, Outgang, Helton, Penrith.

Taking the first position in the continental cross hoggs were a pen of 5 Texel cross hoggs with lambs from Messrs Pedley, Yore House, Sedbergh which went on to sell for £202 per outfit (£101 per life) to Messrs Nelson, Rosgill Head, Penrith.

1st prize Continental Hoggs

The first placed Swaledale ewes with lambs at foot was given to a pen of five ewes with twin Mule lambs at foot from Messrs Armstrong, Ghyll Croft, Carlisle which sold for £147 per outfit to Messrs Smith, Kelmore Hill Farm, Workington.

1st prize Swaledale Hoggs

Swaledale ewes topped at £100 per life (£200 per outfit) for a ewe with Mule gimmer lamb at foot also from Messrs Armstrong.

Messrs Sayer, Musgrave House, Great Musgrave sold a pen of five Swaledale ewes with single mule lambs at foot to make £78 per life (£156 per outfit) selling to Messrs Fell, Chapel Farm, Keswick.

George Slack, Heather Bank, Appleby sold his consignment of Texel cross mule hoggs and shearlings with Dutch Texel cross lambs at foot to top at £318 per outfit (£106 per life) for Texel shearlings with twin Beltex cross lambs at foot and £104 per life (£208 per outfit) for a pen of Texel cross mule hoggs with Dutch Texel lambs. The whole run of 107 lives from this home selling to average £90 per head.
