Kirkby Stephen Opening Show & Sale of Store Cattle

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their opening prize show and Sale of Store Cattle for 2018; where a catalogued entry of 547 cattle were on offer.

Taking the overall Championship and topping the sale at £2250 was a British Blue heifer from Messrs Pedley, Oaktree, Barbon and which was bought by Messrs Williamson, Hamsterley.

Taking the Reserve Championship was the first placed steer; a British Blue cross consigned by Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside which went on to sell for £1475 to Messrs Hargreaves, Preston.

The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by I’Ansons of Masham and was judged by Mr William Fawcett, Alnwick.

The opening store cattle sale of 2018 set off with a bang here at Kirkby Stephen with a flying trade from start to finish being achieved.

Heifers averaged £1051.24 (up £24.61 on the year);  Steers averaged £1025.66 (up £24.28 on the year).

Good quality strong cattle were in great demand and regularly sold between £1300 and £1475.

Shapely bred young cattle were also a flying trade with both steers and heifers between 8-12 months regularly selling between £1100 and £1200.

Black & White steers were also a fantastic trade with a pen of five Holstein Friesian steers selling for £1075 from Messrs Clarke, Stripes Farm, Waitby. The 60 Black & White steers forward averaged a strong £867.40.
