Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, where an entry of 3,737 sheep were forward consisting of 1,877 prime lambs and 1,860 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £126.80 was a 46kg Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth, Ripon which was bought by Dowding’s Butchers, Appleby.

Topping at 292.3p/kg was a Beltex cross lambs from Messrs Walton, Goodlie Hill Cottage, Great Asby which was bought by Vivers Scotlamb Ltd.

Our annual young handlers show was held which saw a fantastic entry of 21 youngsters putting their handling skills on show to our judge Mr Geoff Tunstall of Eden Farm Supplies (Brough) Ltd.

Mr Tunstall has a difficult task but finally awarded the champion handler to 5 year old Thomas Brass of Bridge End Farm, Soulby this lamb went on to be sold for £122 and purchased by Steadmans Butchers, Kirkby Stephen.  Taking the reserve champion handler was 10 year old Henry Fairburn of Marriforth, Ripon.

Credit must go to all the 21 young handlers who were turned out in smart attire and displayed wonderful handling skills.Young Handlers

The prime lamb trade here at Kirkby Stephen could only be described as on fire, with an overall sale average of 202.48p/kg and £84.15 being achieved which was much dearer than had been seen anywhere in the week so far.

Messrs Fairburn, Marriforth sold another run of 142 lambs to average 38.7kg, £85.41 (220.6p/kg).

Messrs Lyle, Staingills Farm, Culgaith sold a consignment of 143 lambs to average 40.5kg, £88.24 (217.8p/kg).

Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington sold a good meated run of 50 Texel cross Mule lambs to average 45.5kg, £96.36 (211.7p/kg).

Good pens of meaty Mule lambs sold between 185-190p/kg with Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm, Haltwhistle selling a great pen of 10, 45kg Mules to make £85.80.

A record entry for Kirkby Stephen mart of over 1800 cast sheep were forward, with trade for all good meated or strong ewes of any breed also being dearer.

Topping this section at £132.50 was a pen of Texel cross ewes from Messrs Reed, Lands Farm, Bishop Auckland.

Swaledale ewes sold to £72.50 for a pen from Messrs Thompson, Allotment Farm, Consett.

Mule ewes topped at £90.50 for a pen from Messrs Marston, South View, Winton.
