Kirkby Stephen Store Cattle Sale

Harrison & Hetherington held their February Prize Sale of Store cattle when a catalogued entry of 605 head were on offer.

Topping the sale at £2900 was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Whitaker, Bowsber, Clapham which was bought by Brown & Mason, Keasden Head.

Steers topped twice at £1475 firstly for a 10 month old Limousin cross from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick which was bought by Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm, Shap.

Next at £1475 was another Limousin cross steer from Messrs Beckwith, New Hall, Barras which was bought by Messrs Armstrong, County Durham.

Next selling for £2000 was a 9 month old British Blue cross heifer from Messrs Hodgson, Park House Farm, Ravenstonedale which was bought by Messrs Postlethwaite, Holmrook.

The weather may have been bitterly cold but the store cattle trade in Kirkby Stephen certainly wasn’t, as boiling point would be a more accurate description, and was described by several buyers as the dearest they had ever seen store cattle sold!!

Heifers averaged £1136.13 (up £203.70 on the year)

Steers averaged £1104.96 (up £156.29 on the year)

A fantastic overall sale average of £1120.64 was achieved with the majority of the cattle being 9-12 months old.

Some great consignments of top quality homebred continental cross stores were forward here at Kirkby Stephen which are a true credit to all consigners who put a endless amount of work and effort into breeding these types of cattle and continue to farm suckler herds.

Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick sold a fantastic consignment of 30 8-10 month old steers and heifers to average a whopping £1203.04, with 9 month old Limousin cross steers from this home selling to £1375, 8 month old Limousin steers selling to £1200, 10 month old Limousin cross heifers selling to £1840 and £1500 and 8 month old British Blue cross heifer selling to £1515 all from Sowerthwaite Farm.

Messrs Hodgson, Park House Farm, Ravenstonedale sold a run of 10 9-11month old British Blue cross heifers to average a staggering £1334.50 with 9 month old selling for £2000 and 11 month old heifers making £1680 from this home.

It was Messrs Whitaker, Clapham first time selling cattle at Kirkby Stephen and it certainly was some start as their 6 British Blue & Limousin cross heifers sold to average £1890.

Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Shap sold 13 month old Limousin cross steers to make £1435, and 14 month old Limousin cross steers to £1425.

Messrs Marston, Easegill Head, Wharton sold 12 month old British Blue cross heifers to £1465 and 12 month old British Blue cross steers to £1415.

Messrs Millar, Crookholm, Canonbie sold 10 month old steers to make £1400.
