Middleton-In-Teesdale Annual Show and Sale of Draft Swaledale Ewes and Shearling Gimmers

At Middleton-In-Teesdale Mart, on Monday 28th September, Harrison & Hetherington held their Annual show and sale of 3666 draft Swaledale ewes and shearling gimmers.

A wonderful show of ewes ewe presented, and were met with one of the best trades in recent memory. With ewes averaging £134.74 (+£45) and Shearling gimmers averaging £123.62 (+£39). The pre sale show was kindly judge by Mr Robert Marrs, Manor Farm, who awarded the following prizes:

Champion: CR Raine & Sons, Stanhope Gate Farm, Laneside, Barnard Castle

Topping the sale was the first prize pen of ewes and Overall Champion from Messrs CR Raine & Sons, Stanhope Gate, selling to a new centre record of £600 to Mr Eccles, Barnard Castle. The Reserve Champion and second prize pen also came from the Raine Family, these sold to £450 to Mr Collingwood, Bishop Auckland.

Others sold to £380 for a pen of 10 from Messrs Bentley, Lanehaed Farm. Messrs White, Rigg Farm also sold a pen of 10 to £210.

The first prize pen of shearlings were consigned by Messrs Peirson, Friar House Farm who sold to £158, these went home with Messrs Wilkinson, Bishop Aukland.

Topping the shearling trade overall was a quality pen of 5 from Messrs Wilson, Arngill House, selling to Messrs Crocker, Johnby for £200.

Many more new buyers were present, travelling as far as Aberdeen and Devon, with a number leaving short of requirements.
