Middleton In Teesdale Show and Sale of Spring Born Calves

5th November 2019

The fireworks started early at Middleton in Teesdale Mart on Tuesday 5th November as the Annual Prize Show and Sale of Suckled Calves got off to a cracking start as the most fantastic show of Spring born Suckled Calves went before a packed ringside of buyers from the length and breadth of Great Britain.

With some superb runs of calves early in the sale it wasn’t long until the thousand pound barrier was broken for a wonderful January born black Limousin heifer from Messrs Reed, Lands Farm, West Gate, no fewer than 42 calves broke the four figure barrier throughout the sale.

The outstanding quality of the calves on offer at this renowned sale was a credit to the consignors, the majority of whom come from within a 10 mile radius of the mart.

Competition for quality black Limousin heifers good enough to make breeding replacements was once again a feature of this sale and 40 were purchased by 10 different buyers for this purpose.

Trade proved to be above and beyond all expectations considering the current finished trade, and with plenty of interest from the cattle showing fraternity there were some particular highlights.

The show of single calves was judged by Aled Roberts from Anglesey who made an extremely professional job of placing some outstanding entries.

The Supreme Champion, winning the Phillip Beadle Perpetual Trophy as well as the National Westminster Challenge Perpetual Cup and the Pikestone Rose Bowl, was awarded to the Champion heifer, an April born Black Limousin cross heifer from Tom and Kay Hutchinson, Bail Hill, Forest in Teesdale. This marvellous and very correct heifer, by Wilodge Inchbyinch, went on to make £2150 and was purchased by well known show cattle producer Phil Sellers from Lincolnshire.

Overall Champion shown by Messrs Hutchinson

The Reserve Supreme Champion was awarded to John, Martyn and Harry Mitchell, Parrick House, Marwood, whose extremely smart, red Limousin steer calf went on to make £1060 and was purchased by Will Ketley from Colchester.
